Howard County Department of Public Works is composed of the Director's Office, Bureau of Engineering, Bureau of Environmental Services, Bureau of Facilities, Bureau of Highways and Bureau of Utilities.

The Director's Office provides leadership and coordination among the Bureaus to advance the quality of life for our community by providing exceptional level of public service. Employees coordinate the daily functions, customer service, the capital improvement program and real estate services.


DEPARTMENT NEWS

  • There will be special Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) drop-off days at the Alpha Ridge Landfill on Saturday, January 7, February 4 and March 4. Please visit our HHW web page for details about what can be dropped off.
  • The County will beta launch a new cutting-edge snow plow tracker in mid-December.

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday - On Monday, January 16, Howard County Government offices, courts, Howard County Department of Community Resources and Services 50+ Centers and animal shelter will be CLOSED in observance of the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday. The County's holiday slide schedule will NOT BE IN EFFECT the week of January 16-21. Trash, recycling and food scrap curbside collection will operate as NORMAL and the Alpha Ridge Landfill will be OPEN. To view a list of what holidays do affect curbside collection, please visit www.howardcountymd.gov/holidayschedule.

While Howard County Recreation and Parks' community centers, county parks, Cedar Lane and Schooley Mill Activity Rooms, and the Meadowbrook Athletic Complex will be OPEN on the 16th, the Robinson Nature Center will be CLOSED. In addition, the Howard County Restored Ellicott City Colored School will be open on the 16th; however, all other Recreation & Parks' historic sites are closed for the season and will not reopen until April.

The Regional Transportation Agency (RTA) will operate on a regular weekday schedule; for more information on RTA, call 1-800-270-9553 or visit www.transitrta.com. All parking regulations and fees will be in effect on Monday, January 16.

The 9-1-1 Center, Howard County Police Department and Howard County Department of Fire and Rescue Services remain staffed 24 hours a day, seven days a week. For emergencies, call 9-1-1; for non-emergencies, call 410-313-2200.
