About
Welcome to HoCo250!
In 2026, the United States turns 250—and Howard County is joining the celebration! Throughout the year, we’ll be rolling out countywide events, community projects, and hands-on activities that spotlight our rich history, our diverse stories, and the people who helped shape this remarkable place we call home.
A dynamic team of historians, civic leaders, cultural partners, event planners, and county staff, HoCo250, is already hard at work designing meaningful, educational—and yes, fun—programs and events for residents of all ages. There’s so much on the horizon, and you won’t want to miss it.
Stay tuned, get involved, and join us at events across the county as we honor our past, celebrate our present, and imagine our future together— America250 and HoCo250 is a once-in-a-generation experience for everyone.
County History
The Declaration of Independence was signed on July 4, 1776, and in 2026, our nation will mark its Semiquincentennial—250 years since its founding.
Howard County’s story stretches back centuries. From early family settlements by the Carrolls and Ellicotts in the 1700s, to the designation of the Howard District within Anne Arundel County in 1839, our community has deep roots in agriculture, milling, transportation, and the pioneering vision that ultimately shaped the planned community of Columbia.
Howard County Historic and Cultural Resources
The Howard County Department of Recreation and Parks manages and preserves several historic sites owned by Howard County. These locations often host educational programs, tours, and events that help bring our shared history to life.
A comprehensive list of sites connected to the 250th anniversary is in development along with the launch of HoCo250’s Passport to History, encouraging residents and visitors to visit historic, cultural and religious sites across the county.
