Howard County Department of Fire and Rescue Services (HCDFRS) will participate in a county-wide initiative providing fire and life safety education to all Howard County residents with a focus on smoke alarm education and installation. The initiative will be called “Project: S.A.F.E.” (Smoke Alarms for Everyone). The goal of S.A.F.E. is to continue providing public education to Howard County residents by issuing and installing smoke alarms to homes that have no alarms or malfunctioning alarms.
HCDFRS has the responsibility to educate, protect, and serve its residents on a daily basis. To accomplish this, the department must provide educational material and fire protection safety recourses to the county residents. Annually, Howard County has several fires resulting in property loss/damage as well as injury and/or death. The majority of these losses come from homes without smoke alarms or nonfunctioning smoke alarms. HCDFRS has provided free smoke alarms for many years however, the program has been underutilized.
The desired outcome of this project is to increase the number of functioning smoke alarms in homes. This initiative will utilize fire companies responding to calls as an opportunity to inspect and replace smoke alarms in all homes.
To achieve this goal, company officers will be coached and provided detailed information as to the distribution of smoke alarms and tracking the statistics. This is a proactive approach that can be utilized while fire and rescue personnel are already in a resident’s home for an assistance call. We will track the frequency of smoke alarm checks, hoping to see increases and a change in behavior from the community. This is a great opportunity to provide a service and educate homeowners on the importance of fire prevention and smoke alarms.
