ELLICOTT CITY, MD – Howard County Executive Calvin Ball is seeking applicants to fill two vacancies on the Commission on Veterans and Military Families – one family member of a veteran or active duty service member and one veteran who is a member of a veteran organization. The deadline to apply is Monday, January 4, 2021.

“We have a duty to serve the more than 20,000 veterans and their families who call Howard County home,” said Ball. “Just as they dedicated their lives to the service of our country and our community, we commit ourselves to meeting their needs and serving them. As the son of a Vietnam-era Air Force Veteran, I was taught how much we owe of our freedoms to our veterans’ sacrifice. I encourage those who share that passion to apply for our Commission for Veterans and Military Families and help us give back.”

Established in 2011, the Commission is comprised of 13 members: nine veterans; two immediate family members of a veteran or person engaged in active-duty service, National Guard or Reserve at time of appointment; and two individuals who work or volunteer for organizations that serve veterans or their families. The purpose of the Commission is to assure that the issues of Howard County veterans and military families are addressed effectively and efficiently. The Commission advises the County Executive and the County Council of the needs of veterans and military families and maintains a list of resources for both.

To be eligible for consideration, candidates must be Howard County residents, 18 years of age or older, have an interest in veteran and military family affairs, and be able to attend the Commission’s meetings on the first Thursday of each month at 7:00 p.m. at Howard County Community Resources Campus, 9830 Patuxent Woods Drive in Columbia. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, meetings are currently taking place virtually via WebEx.

Interested veterans and family members of veterans should send their resume and brief letter explaining why they want to serve on the Commission to Kimberly Pruim either by email to kpruim@howardcountymd.gov or by mail to: Howard County Government, Office of the County Executive, Attn: Kimberly Pruim, 3430 Court House Drive, Ellicott City, MD 21043. The names of eligible applicants will be submitted to the County Executive for approval and then to the County Council for confirmation.
