To provide opportunities for Howard County Youth to participate in positive and meaningful recreational, enrichment and 

leadership programs that support their need to become healthy, engaged, and productive citizens.

Crafts & Fine Arts

Comics Unleashed
Explore comic book design and learn basic drawing techniques, character design, page composition, layout, penciling and inking. Explore a variety of comic genres including superhero, manga, indie, and graphic novels. Please wear comfortable clothing you don’t mind getting dirty. You are encouraged to bring a sketchbook for class and at-home practice. 

Painting for Teens
Work in acrylics to learn or master color mixing, brush work and how to “build” a painting rich with texture and color. The instructor does a demonstration painting each week and works with you one-on-one. Previous experience not necessary.

Digital Photography

Learn how to take your best pictures. Explore composition, lighting and the elements that make memorable photographs. Learn about shutter speed, exposure and using flash and basics on how your camera works. Practice shooting using your camera's built in settings and scene modes. Bring your camera.

Dance

Hip Hop Dance with Nysia Carter
During this high-energy class, focus on choreography, perfect your skills, and learn hip-hop, popping and break-dancing techniques. With an easyto follow breakdown of the basic moves, put various steps together to allow you to step onto any dance floor. Wear comfortable clothes. Jazz shoes or sneakers required.

Personal Training
Each session is customized to fit your needs and abilities. Private training sessions are one participant to one trainer; semi-private sessions are up to three people to one trainer. Sessions are non-transferrable. Registration is first-come, first-served; walk-in and phone registrations only. Sessions must be scheduled at the time of registration. NEW! GJACC BeFit Workshops
Small-group training workshops combine the energy of a group with individual attention from a certified, personal trainer. Learn to create fitness routines, and the body-science behind the methods used. Limit: 9 participants per workshop. Registration: 410-313-4840. Personal Development & Enrichment

Babysitting Fundamentals 

This babysitter training course emphasizes child development, safety, security, first aid, understanding, patience, and other necessary skills. Class includes introduction to hands-only CPR and AED, but does not include CPR certification. Registrants must be at least 11 years old by the first class. Receive a certificate upon course completion. 

 

CLIMB: Day of Leadership

Are you ready to take your leadership skills to the next level? CLIMB (Connection, Leadership, Inspiration, Motivation & Balance) explores different ways to be a leader, work with others and learn more about the world around us. Activities include leadership games, workshops, and team building exercises. Gain confidence and make friends in this positive, welcoming environment. 

Howard County Teen Clubs

Join a diverse group of teens to represent the youth of Howard County and promote programs and events at community centers across the county. Bring your creative ideas and help develop new activities for teens. Monthly meetings focus on developing leadership, social networking and marketing skills. Earn service-learning hours at the meetings and events. Attend four or more meetings and receive a free center membership.

Music

Creative Songwriting at Olenka School of Music

Can you read and hear music written on paper first, just like Mozart did? Speak, read and write in the language of music by generating, exploring and developing ideas into original compositions. Learn to build your own melodies in a variety of styles with accompanying lyrics. Prior music experience is helpful, but NOT necessary. $15 materials fee due at first class. 

Keyboard & Guitar Beginners at Olenka School of Music 

Can you read and hear music written on paper first, just like Mozart did? Learn music as a Universal Language: speaking, reading and writing in music will help you to play piano/keyboard successfully while creating your own melodies and adding chords. $25 materials fee per student due at first class.

Vocal Starz with Olenka School of Music

Voice is our first musical instrument! The approach of learning music as a language will start a great music foundation for vocal technique. Beginner vocalists will share their love of singing in a fun, engaging and collaborative environment $15 materials fee per student due at first class.

 

Theater Arts

Intro to Acting
Enjoy an introduction to the concepts crucial to the theatrical arts:
self-awareness, observation, improvisation, creative imagination, and story-telling. Move towards building and heightening responsiveness
to action and the development of an actor’s skills. Students create, stage, and perform their own scenes. Last class features a short performance highlighting each actor.

Production Class: Roald Dahl's Maltida the Musical by Drama Learning Center
The story of an extraordinary girl who, armed with a vivid imagination and a sharp mind, dares to take a stand and change her own destiny. Students will learn and improve singing, dancing, and acting skills as they work as part of a theatrical team. For elementary school registrants, please see "Youth" section. NEW! C3 Cyber: Coding in Minecraft with LUA
Using a custom mod called "Computercraft", learn how to program robots called "Turtles" inside the world of Minecraft. Learn to use LUA, a simple scripting language used to develop games such as Angry Birds. Use problem-solving skills by programming robots to complete various tasks such as build, mine, and craft items and structures

Colorful Calligraphy Cards & Sharpie Art
Create beautiful cards using the ancient art of calligraphy. Add a splash of color with trending sharpie art to enhance your card. Enjoy the finer points of this timeless art form with a modern twist.
Henna Painting
Learn the basics of mehndi using henna (which is the dye prepared from the henna plant). Class features instruction and hands on activities.
Hacks for Snacks 
Who's hungry? In this class learn quick and easy recipes that you can make when you come home from school or when you are in a hurry. Recipes include smoothies, quesadillas & homemade salsa, and pinwheel sandwiches.
