Anime & Manga: Styles of Classic Mangaka
Appealing to readers of all ages and backgrounds, “manga” (Japanese comics) is the world’s most versatile and influential form of sequential art. Beginners and veteran artists, learn what techniques make manga so popular and how to incorporate them into their drawing. Supplies included, but you are encouraged to bring your own sketchbook.

NEW! Character Design Class
Enjoy learning proportion, basic anatomy, and comparative size among characters. Create ways to make your characters interesting visually. Enjoy creating types of backstory, history, and motives behind your character which influence their appearance and mannerisms. Examine what makes a protagonist and an antagonist and how these elements affect key features in visual designs. 

Comics Unleashed
Explore comic book design and learn basic drawing techniques, character design, page composition, layout, penciling and inking. Explore a variety of comic genres including superhero, Manga, Indie, and graphic novels. Please wear comfortable clothing you don’t mind getting dirty. You are encouraged to bring a sketchbook for class and at-home practice.

Drawing Techniques
Strengthen your drawing skills as you focus on different media including graphite, charcoal, colored pencils, pastels and watercolor pencils. Techniques include modeling, color transitions, gesture style, blending and wet-on-dry. Materials are provided but you are encouraged to bring a sketchbook.

Painting for Teens
Work in acrylics to learn or master color mixing, brush work and how to “build” a painting rich with texture and color. The instructor does a demonstration painting each week and works with you one-on-one. Previous experience not necessary. Materials included.

Hip Hop Dance with Nysia Carter
During this high-energy class, focus on choreography, perfect your skills and learn hip-hop, popping and breakdancing techniques. With an easy-to-follow breakdown of the basic moves, learn how to put various steps together that allow you to step comfortably onto a dance floor at any event. Wear comfortable clothes; jazz shoes or sneakers required. (No class 11/24).

Babysitting Fundamentals
This babysitter training course emphasizes child development, safety, security, first aid, understanding, patience, and other necessary skills. Class includes introduction to hands-only CPR and AED, but does not include CPR certification. Registrants must be at least 11 years old by the first class. Receive a certificate upon course completion.

Need to improve your cooking skills? Want to learn some new techniques and recipes for everyday cooking? Ever wonder how to make simple meals? If you answered yes to any of these questions, then this is the class for you! 

Howard County Teen Clubs
Join a diverse group of teens to represent the youth of Howard County and promote programs and events at community centers across the county. Bring your creative ideas and help develop new activities for teens. Monthly meetings focus on developing leadership, social networking and marketing skills. Earn service-learning hours at the meetings and events. Attend four or more meetings and receive a free center membership.

NEW! How to be an Entrepreneur
During the IDEA Lab, Entrepreneur students learn presentation skills, creative thinking, and problem solving skills when they take the road to Entrepreneurship. From learning about costs, budgeting, product design all the way to hosting their own small business showcase, these budding entrepreneurs will learn money management, problem solving and other entrepreneurial skills. Business product ideas are brought to life with the use of technology, allowing our students to design and manipulate 3D design models.

Social Etiquette & Communication Skills Express
Designed for the student with a busy schedule, this class emphasizes the importance of having responsible decorum in all aspects of life. Topics include initial impressions, dress for success, conversation and listening, etiquette in public, phone and electronic etiquette. Don’t miss this opportunity to discover why research demonstrates that social skills are paramount for success in later life! This is a great class as an introduction or a refresher. 

Creative Writing for Teens
Students, explore creative writing through poetry, fiction, and non-fiction. Compose short stories, autobiographical works, and poems. Develop your own voices as authors as well as original plots and character development. The last class features a brief reading highlighting each student’s work.

Music

Guitar Studio with Olenka School of Music (OSM)
Bring your electric or acoustic guitar and get ready to play your favorite songs. Learn valuable warm-ups and finger exercises, scales and how to apply basic chords to any song, in any style of music. No previous music experience necessary. Students must bring their own guitar. $30 materials fee per student due at first class. 

Vocal Teenz with Olenka School of Music
Strengthen and improve your natural vocal talents while collaborating with fellow vocalists to create one-of-a-kind improvisational vocal performances. Choose songs, design staging, assign solos (everyone has a chance to shine), and develop choreography. $30 materials fee per family (cash/check to OSM) due at first class. (No class 11/20.)

Theater Arts

Intro to Acting
Enjoy an introduction to the concepts crucial to the theatrical arts: self-awareness, observation, improvisation, creative imagination, and story-telling. Move towards building and heightening responsiveness to action and the development of an actor’s skills. Students create, stage, and perform their own scenes. NEW! Teens Nite Out! (Nov 3)
Teens are taking over the Community Center! Get ready for a night of games, contests, sports, swimming and more. You are supervised at all times by our experienced and energetic staff. Bring your swimsuit and towel and shoes for sports. All participants must be checked in by 8pm. Light snacks and drinks included. 

Teen Lock-in! (Dec 7)
Want to stay up really late? Get ready for a night of cooperative games, music, movies, delicious food, contests and more. This after-hours party includes all-night access to gym, night-time Nerf battles, and video game tournaments. You are supervised at all times by our experienced & energetic staff. Boys and girls sleep in different rooms. Food and snacks include pizza at 10pm, midnight snack and continental breakfast at 8am. Bring your sleeping bag and pillow, comfortable clothes and shoes for sports. All participants must be checked in by 9pm.

Leadership and Teen Clubs

Join a diverse group of teens! Develop leadership skills, participate in service projects and help support special events in your community and around the county. Monthly meetings include dinner, a dynamic leadership activity and conclude with a work session where you can get creative. Earn service-learning hours at the meetings and events.
