Accessible Resources for Independence

ARI - assists motivated people in developing their self-determined goals to gain and retain greater independence. Peer mentors with disabilities at ARI serve as role models to provide support and creative solutions for issues of life through the sharing of information and promoting awareness about community-based options for receiving services and supports. Community Action Council   

Community Action Council (CAC) - Provides programs and emergency services for low-income residents to alleviate the effects of poverty and promote self-sufficiency. Services include Eviction Prevention, First Month's Rent, Energy Assistance, Food Bank and Head Start.

 Family & Children's Services of Central Maryland  

Family & Children's Services of Central Maryland (FCS) - Provides case management services, counseling for individuals, couples and families. Family & Children Services of Central Maryland also offers in-home assistance for the elderly or adults with disabilities on a sliding scale fee. To find out more about FCS 


HopeWorks - Provides services to families impacted by domestic violence: 24-hour hotline, emergency and transitional shelter, legal assistance counseling, education and outreach. To find out more about HopeWorks 


Foreign Born Information and Referral Network (FIRN) - Provides services to immigrants as they bridge into the American culture. Services include immigration counseling, interpreters, consumer counseling, adult and student literacy, job counseling and crisis counseling. FIRN is an accredited immigration agency. Howard County Department of Social Services (HCDSS) - Services promote stability, employment, self-sufficiency, and a safe environment for children and vulnerable adults. At the Multiservice Center, HCDSS provides assistance to low-income families through the Temporary Cash Assistance grant (assistance grants for families without income), Food Stamp (assistance in purchasing food) and Medical Assistance (assistance in paying cost of health care.  Maryland  Legal Aid 

The Maryland Legal Aid provides access to free legal services to low-income persons. Accepts cases in the area of family/domestic, housing, income maintenance (public benefits) and elder law and consumer/finance. Also provides specialized representation to vulnerable populations such as senior citizens, immigrant workers, nursing homes and assisted living residents.  Howard County Workforce Development  

Howard County Workforce Development - Provides access to job databases for Howard County and the surrounding area. The agency assists with job searches, creating resumes and accessing the Columbia Workforce Center. To find out more about Howard County Workforce Development,

The Howard County Audrey Robbins Employee Team of the Year is the MultiService Center, a seven-year old nonprofit organization that focuses on serving the residents of southeast Howard County. The Center’s mission is “to enrich lives in this community by offering ready access to human services and support to help clients become self-sufficient.”

Q:  What are the hours of operation for the MSC? 

A: The hours of operation are Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, 8:30am to 4:30pm and Wednesday’s 11:00am to 7:00pm.  The contact number is 410-313-0220.  

Q:  Do I need an appointment to speak with a Case Worker or Counselor? 

A: No, walk-ins are welcomed.   

 Q:  Can I come to the MSC if I don’t live in North Laurel, Savage or Fulton? 

A:  Yes, there are services at the MSC that can be provided to you as a Howard County resident.   

Q:  Is there a cost for counseling services or other programs at the MSC?  

A:  No, all services are provided to Howard County residents free of charge.   

Q:  Is there a waiting list for counseling services?   

A: There is not a waiting list for counseling services.  You can contact the MSC to schedule an appointment to speak with someone.
