About Us
The Gary J. Arthur Community Center is a true “community facility” built to serve the growing population in the western part of the county. Located within Western Regional Park, the facility is shared by the Departments of Recreation & Parks, Health, and the Office on Aging. Its features include a fitness room, gymnasium with two basketball courts, indoor walking track, multi-purpose rooms, commercial kitchen, activity rooms, and much more.

Inclement weather policy

In the event of inclement weather, the center will adhere to the following policy: 

If Howard County schools experience a one-hour delay, the Center will open at 9:30am
If Howard County schools experience a two-hour delay, the Center will open at 10:30am. 
If Howard County schools are closed, the Center will strive to open at 10:30am.

Center Memberships

All patrons entering the facility must have a center membership or pay the drop-in rate of $5/visit, unless they are a participant in a Recreation and Parks program. The center membership gives you access to the three community centers (does not include fitness room).

Howard County Recreation & Parks and Office on Aging & Independence partnered together to provide packages that are designed to give individuals access to meet their health and wellness needs.

Children, enjoy having access to the pool, gymnasium and walking track, while accompanied by a chaperone over 18 years old. Chaperone must have a valid membership or pay the drop-in rate of $5/visit.

From June - August please call 410-313-4452 and press option #1 for drop-in activity availability as summer camps are in progress and the schedule changes weekly. Drop-in activity is very limited during these months.Children 15 years and under require adult supervision in the facility. Children 12-15 years old require adult supervision in the facility, except during after-school TeenZone program (Center Membership required). For info and to confirm time, call 410-313-4840. All patrons entering the facility must pay the daily admission or have a valid membership, unless they are a participant in a Howard County Recreation and Parks program taking place at the center.

Facility Rentals

Many areas of the Gary J. Arthur Community Center are available for rent during operating hours. Rental areas can be used for parties, special events, business meetings, and other activities. All applicants must be at least 21 years of age, and a Facility Rental Request Form is required to check for availability. All requests are reviewed on a first come, first serve basis. A Rental Resource Guide is available for Download to provide additional information or call the Center Front Desk at 410-313-4840. The center is open daily from 7am-9pm M-Sa and 9am-6pm on Sundays, staff are able to provide a tour of the building and provide additional information about the specific amenities GJACC has to offer.

The Haymeadow room is a small (500sf) room conveniently located to the main lobby, ideal for small birthday parties, meetings or breakout space for larger events. The room is light filled with multiple windows and is equipped with wall mounted dry erase board and electric projector screen.

The Lisbon room is the ideal room for small meetings needing privacy and projector use. Equipped with dry erase board, projection screen, oversized wall mounted whiteboard. Ideal for meetings and event breakout room.

 The Patapsco room is fully carpeted room with 14’ high ceilings. It has easy access to the side auxiliary parking lot and equipped with an oversized whiteboard, projector screen and countertop with sink.

 The rooms (I,II,III) can be combined to create a space that is large and spacious with a total seating capacity banquet stile of 150 chairs or sectioned off to create three equal sized rooms with a seating capacity of 50. The rooms are lit by suspended from the 14’ ceilings with pendent lights and large oversized windows facing the sunset in the evening. An outdoor patio is accessible with picnic table seating and maintained grass area.

The West Friendship room has easy access to the side auxiliary parking lot with dedicated privet entrance. A kitchenette is equipped with refrigerator, Dishwasher, sink and ample counter space. Additionally private accessible restrooms are available within the room.

The Dayton Arts and Crafts Room is naturally lit by multiple windows facing the rear open space of the center. Equipped with two sink areas with ample counter top space, dry erase boards. Ideal for group projects, team parties, birthday celebrations and meetings.

The Brighton room is a kid-friendly large space with multiple wall sized windows, easy access to the playground, and reading/entertainer bench. Two countertop areas with sinks and refrigerator available along with both private youth and adult bathroom within the room. Youth sized furniture available. Ideal for children’s birthday parties & celebrations.

A 15,500-square-foot open space to accommodate special events, expos/trade shows, seminars, and multiple sports. Able to hold 1,500 people and equipped with ceiling-suspended surround sound with wireless microphone. Form your next basketball practice or volleyball tournament to a fundraiser or after prom, we can accommodate it all. 

• 1/14-mile, three-lane track

• Six-row bleacher seating on each court

• Synthetic multi-use flooring system

• Configurable for two in-floor volleyball courts or two full-court basketball games

The Courtyard is located in the center of the Community Center. Well maintained seasonal foliage with rock river hardscape and in ground lighting for nighttime use. Furnished with outdoor teak tables, chairs, and benches or event chairs can be used. A great outdoor, relaxed setting for any event/occasion.

Is equipped with Commercial kitchen equipment with multiple deep sinks, refrigerators, freezers, plenty of counter/prep area, and a 300lb ice maker. With a catering license, use of gas stove, oven, and steam table and cooling bar is permitted. A large roll up window allows easy access to the multipurpose rooms.

The Lounge is a quiet relaxing area with electric ignited gas fire place. Multiple windows provide natural light and a view of the centers Courtyard. Furnished with multiple lounges chairs, couches. Fantastic extra space for large events.

Party Packages
Let us host your next occasion to create a memorable experience. Packages offer a variety of themes to decorate your party room. All party packages include table cloths, a center piece, plates, napkins, cups and eating utensils for 20 guests, fees applied for additional guests. Security Deposit

A security deposit is required at the time the rental reservation is made. The security deposit will be refunded after the event provided there are no violations of the Rental Agreement. At the conclusion of the rental, a walk through will be performed with the organizer.

Rental Agreement

Full payment of the rental fee is due within one (1) month of the event in order to finalize the Rental Agreement. If request is made with less than one (1) month before the event, full payment is due at the time of reservation. The Rental Agreement outlines the rental terms, policies, procedures, and fees. For larger events that require a significant payment, scheduled payments may be arranged with the Community Center Director.

General Setup & Cleanup

Your rental reservation must include your setup and cleanup time. The organizer is responsible for removal of all decorations and trash. The Gary J. Arthur Community Center will provide general setup of all rental events; however, if the setup or breakdown requires additional staff to be scheduled, the rental organizer will be responsible for the cost. The organizer is required to be on site during the rental. If additional equipment is needed for the rental event (tables, chairs, audio-visual, etc.) the rental organizer is responsible for making arrangements for rental of these items once they have been approved by facility management.

Each 30-minute session is customized to fit your individual needs and abilities. Private training sessions are one participant to one trainer; semi-private sessions are up to three participants to one trainer. Sessions are non-transferrable. Registration for sessions is first-come, first-served. All sessions must be scheduled at the time of registration.
