ABOUT

The Howard County Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday Commission (MLK) was established by order of the Howard County Executive to encourage and coordinate appropriate ceremonies and activities honoring Martin Luther King, Jr. Commissioners are appointed by the County Executive to serve an initial term of two years. Each year, the MLK celebration takes place on the third Sunday of January. The Day of Service takes place the next day on the third Monday of January. The Day of Service provides a variety of service opportunities throughout the community that is representative of Dr. King’s dedication to servant leadership.

The Howard County Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday Commission encourages you to honor Dr. King's legacy by participating in our year round service activities, our annual MLK Holiday Celebration and Day of Service:

MARTIN LUTHER KING. JR. MONTHLY FOOD PANTRY

The monthly pop-up food pantry is hosted in partnership with the Harriet Tubman Foundation of Howard County.  Each month over 300 families receive much-needed food during these challenging times.

Howard County Executive Calvin Ball, the Office of Human Rights & Equity, and the Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday Commission invite you to virtually join us for our annual MLK Holiday Celebration on Sunday, January 16th airing at 2:00 pm on the Howard County Facebook page and YouTube channel.

We are disappointed we cannot host this year’s celebration in person, but due to an increase in COVID cases, we desire to prioritize everyone’s health and safety. Tune in to this awesome event and listen to Wes Moore, our featured Keynote Speaker, and watch our student contest winners receive their prizes.

In addition, we will honor the community leaders who have been chosen as the recipients of the Living the Dream Award. You do not want to miss this year’s virtual program!

Part of the Living the Dream MLK Day of Service Celebration: HopeWorks’ Youth Leadership Project
Presents a Teen Listening Session

As HopeWorks continues to grow and center our work around creating a world free from violence, we understand that society’s racist structures have impacted our relationships with each other and the world. It is important to talk about the ways we engage with each other in terms of peace and intersectionality, and constantly be open to learning. This coming MLK day, HopeWorks’ Youth Leaders strive to engage and continue these important conversations of non-violence, peace, and social justice that Martin Luther King, Jr. advocated for.

Young people ages 13 to 18 are invited to join HopeWorks’ Youth Leaders as teens engage in conversation around non-violence, peace, and social justice. The conversation will involve how these topics may or may not show up in teens’ daily lives and how today’s realities impact their visibility. We hope to learn and share with each other in a way that can provide the most relief.

Everyone can do something. In this interactive workshop, presented by HopeWorks, we will talk about all the things – big and small – that we can do to create peaceful, healthy relationships and communities.

Participants are encouraged to have art materials ready because, after our discussion, we will spend time listening to a Dr. King speech and music as we create art to inspire healing, equity, and transformation.

Please be ready with any art supplies you have, including crayons, colored pencils, markers, cardboard, or a journal.

HIGHWAY

Chesapeake Conversations: Monday, January 17th 7 PM - In honor of the Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday, Interfaith Partners for the Chesapeake’s One Water Partnership program invites you to join us for a virtual screening of the short environmental justice film Disruption: Baltimore’s “Highway to Nowhere” followed by a panel discussion.

Old West Baltimore was one of several of America's most vibrant Black communities that was irreparably disrupted and damaged by 20th century federal highway projects. This short film begins to explore the history and legacy of Baltimore's infamous "Highway To Nowhere" and the damage its construction wrought upon a once great American community.

Panel discussion and Q&A with:

Rev. Brenda White, MDIV, Allen A.M.E. Church & Pathway Forward
Nneka Nnamdi, Fight Blight Bmore
Darin Crew, Blue Water Baltimore, Senior Operations Manager
