ELLICOTT CITY – Howard County Executive Calvin Ball will join Police Chief Lisa Myers, Special Olympics Maryland Board of Directors Chairman John Newnan, officers and Special Olympic athletes for Howard County’s 34th annual Law Enforcement Torch Run on Thursday, June 6 at 9:00 a.m. at Centennial Park South, 10000 MD 108 in Ellicott City.

“The Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics has been a successful fundraiser and beloved event in Howard County for decades. I look forward to joining our Police, and all attendees, at Centennial Park for the run,” said Ball. “As the ‘Flame of Hope’ passes through our community, we will stand with the Police Department in support of all our Special Olympics athletes.”

The Torch Run is a year-round fundraising effort organized by law enforcement officers around the world. Each year, law enforcement officers throughout Maryland raise money for Special Olympics. During the opening ceremony, the Police Department will swear-in Howard County Special Olympics athletes as honorary law enforcement officers.

At approximately 10:00 a.m., Howard County Police will receive the “Flame of Hope,” the Special Olympic Torch, and then with the assistance of several Special Olympic athletes, will carry the torch over six miles on roadways around the park. The torch will then continue its journey to Towson University for the 2019 Special Olympics Maryland Summer Games Opening Ceremonies.
