Learn More About the Vaccines

The Health Department is currently contacting people to ensure the State's immunization records are correct and/or to provide the opportunity to be fully vaccinated (for those who haven't received their second dose).  We are learning most people are fully vaccinated, but frequently the record does not indicate that due to data collection issues (often due to name discrepancies).  If you are contacted, please let us know your vaccination status.

Information About Pfizer Booster Shots and Additional Shots for the Immunocompromised

Booster Shots

The FDA and CDC have authorized a booster shot of the Pfizer vaccine for certain individuals. To be eligible for this booster shot, you must have received the first two doses of the Pfizer vaccine more than 6 months ago and you must fall into one of the below categories, as designated by the CDC:

  • people 65 years and older and residents in long-term care settings should receive a booster shot of Pfizer-BioNTech’s COVID-19 vaccine at least 6 months after their Pfizer-BioNTech primary series
  • people aged 50–64 years with underlying medical conditions should receive a booster shot of Pfizer-BioNTech’s COVID-19 vaccine at least 6 months after their Pfizer-BioNTech primary series
  • people aged 18–49 years with underlying medical conditions may receive a booster shot of Pfizer-BioNTech’s COVID-19 vaccine at least 6 months after their Pfizer-BioNTech primary series, based on their individual benefits and risks
  • people aged 18-64 years who are at increased risk for COVID-19 exposure and transmission because of occupational or institutional setting may receive a booster shot of Pfizer-BioNTech’s COVID-19 vaccine at least 6 months after their Pfizer-BioNTech primary series, based on their individual benefits and risks.

Though no proof or doctor's note will be required at HCHD-run clinics, individuals will be asked to self-attest that they are eligible for a booster shot. Documentation proving you have previously received the Pfizer vaccine will be required. Either bring your vaccine card or verify your vaccine information has been accurately recorded in Immunet, the State of Maryland Immunization database. Individuals should talk to their healthcare provider about their specific situation, and whether getting an additional dose is appropriate for them.

Immunocompromised Individuals

The Health Department continues to administer 3rd doses of mRNA (Pfizer and Moderna) vaccine to individuals considered moderately to severely immunocompromised at all Health Department-run clinics. Individuals should talk to their healthcare provider about their medical condition, and whether getting an additional dose is appropriate for them.

The CDC provides additional information about those individuals that may meet the criteria for immunocompromised here. Though no proof or doctor's note will be required at HCHD-run clinics, individuals will be asked to self-attest that they are immunocompromised and eligible for a 3rd vaccine dose. Please bring your vaccine card with you to verify the vaccine type you should receive.

Booster shots are also available from local pharmacies, retail stores, and/or your medical provider. Individuals who need assistance scheduling an appointment should call 410-313-6284.

Pfizer Vaccine For Ages 12-15

Hear from a real HoCo family: why they got vaxxed, and why you should, too.

Ready to get your shot? Visit bit.ly/HoCOVIDVaccine to find a clinic that's right for you.

The FDA and CDC have approved the use of the Pfizer/BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine for adolescents ages 12-15. This means our national vaccine safety system has carefully analyzed the data from the clinical trials for this age group and determined that the vaccine is safe and effective.

The more people who are vaccinated, the closer we all come to ending this pandemic. Beginning to vaccinate adolescents means a safer experience for in-person school, in-person summer camp, and while around high-risk family members. Parents of children ages 12-17 can register for a Pfizer vaccine clinic from the list below or use the State vaccine locator to find other Pfizer vaccine clinics in the area.

Adolescents with disabilities:

Parents/caregivers of adolescents, ages 12-15, who are homebound due to a physical/mental impairment or who have a developmental disability requiring special accommodations: Call us at 410-313-6284 for assistance scheduling their vaccination appointment.

Health Department Vaccination Clinics

The following clinics are open to anyone eligible for vaccine. As planning continues for the approval of booster shots, an appointment system will be used for all clinics at the Health Department beginning Monday, September 20 to ensure an efficient vaccination process. Walk-ups will not be accepted at any upcoming clinic where "appointment required" is noted. If you are unable to complete the online registration, call 410-313-6284. Operators are standing by Monday - Friday from 8:30am - 4:30pm.

Vaccine clinic update (9/17/21): All upcoming vaccination clinics at Howard Community College are cancelled due to ongoing construction. HCHD will continue to hold regular vaccine clinics at the Howard County Health Department, Ascend One building (8930 Stanford Blvd., Columbia, MD 21045).

Important Information:

  • Adolescents ages 12 - 17 can only receive the Pfizer vaccine. Please note the vaccine type provided at a clinic before making your appointment.
  • Parents are encouraged to accompany their children into the Pfizer vaccination clinics.
  • Minor consent forms for COVID-19 vaccination can be found here: Pfizer Vaccine Minor Consent Forms. (Signed consent form is required if parent/guardian is unable to attend either vaccine dose appointment)
  • Unless a specific vaccine type is listed, ALL vaccines will be offered at Health Department clinics.
  • Individuals in need of a second vaccine dose can schedule an appointment using the links below, call 410-313-6284 or email [email protected].
  • Anyone receiving a third/booster vaccine shot should bring their vaccine card or other proof of vaccination to verify the vaccine type that should be received.
  • Take home COVID-19 test kits are available at Health Department COVID-19 vaccine clinics (walk-up, no appointment required). Testing kits are not available at clinics hosted by other organizations. Find more information about Azova saliva PCR testing here.
