ELLICOTT CITY, MD – A Howard County road maintenance project to extend the lifespan of some of the County’s roads by seven to ten years is scheduled to begin on or about Monday, August 3. Using a “chip seal” process, crews spray liquid asphalt emulsion on the roadway and immediately cover the surface with fine stone. Rubber tired rollers then push the stone into the asphalt emulsion. Once the stone adheres to the asphalt emulsion, loose stone is swept. Weather permitting, the project is expected to be completed by late October.

County roads to be addressed will include:

Signs and flagging operations will be in place to direct traffic as needed as lane shifts can be expected during construction hours, Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

While the County and its transportation partners work hard to maintain safe traffic mobility in work zones, drivers are reminded to stay alert and look for reduced speed limits, narrow driving lanes and highway workers. Please slow down and don’t follow too closely when traveling through a work zone. Remember, work zone safety is in your hands.
