On June 4th, Howard County Executive Calvin Ball hosted Howard County’s first Local Business Certification Workshop, in partnership with the Office of Purchasing. The free event provided local business owners with assistance in the Howard County Procurement Process, the Local Business Initiative, and the Equal Business Opportunity (EBO) Program.

Today, Howard County Executive Calvin Ball released the 2019 report, “Response To A Crisis: Opioids in Howard County.” The report from the Howard County Health Department detailed the current statistics on overdoses, the action plan to address the crisis, and stakeholder engagement efforts.

Howard County Executive Calvin Ball has re-opened the Agricultural Land Preservation Program (ALPP) to protect county farmland and support local farmers. The program was shut down a year ago due to a budget shortfall. By working with the Department of Planning and Zoning, the Finance Department, and the Agricultural Preservation Board, Ball was able to responsibly restore this important program.

Howard County Executive Calvin Ball will join Police Chief Lisa Myers, Special Olympics Maryland Board of Directors Chairman John Newnan, officers and Special Olympic athletes for Howard County’s 34th annual Law Enforcement Torch Run on Thursday, June 6 at 9:00 a.m. at Centennial Park South, 10000 MD 108 in Ellicott City. 

Howard County Executive Calvin Ball will hold a press conference on Wednesday to make an announcement regarding agricultural preservation. Ball will announce major action to support our local farmers, step up preservation efforts, and protect our environment. 

Howard County Executive Calvin Ball has directed the county government to observe LGBTQ+ Pride Month during June to support those who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer+ and to provide opportunities for dialogue about sexual orientation and gender identity.

On May 30, 2019, a tornado warning was issued for Howard County at approximately 3:22 p.m. The National Weather Service has confirmed a tornado touched down near Glenelg, causing over 3,000 homes to lose power and over 30 roads to close.

A Howard County construction project to install a mini-roundabout at the intersection of Stevens Forest Road, Nightstreet Hill and Farewell Road in Columbia, is scheduled to begin on or about Monday, June 10.

A Howard County construction project to upgrade the Allenford (10068 Green Clover Drive) and Chamberlea (2855 Thornbrook Road) sewer pumping stations in Ellicott City is scheduled to begin on or about Monday, June 10. Weather permitting, the project is expected to be completed by mid-December.

The County's Office on Aging and Independence, in collaboration with AARP Maryland, will co-host a shred event and information day on Saturday, June 15 to mark World Elder Abuse Awareness Day.

Starting this month, the county's Department of Recreation & Parks, the United States Department of Agriculture’s Agricultural Research Service and University of Maryland will begin the next phase of an ongoing study to evaluate integrated tick control strategies on public lands in Howard County adjacent to residential communities.

Howard County Executive Calvin Ball announced today that a total of $200,230,000 of Consolidated Public Improvement, Metropolitan District and refunding bonds were priced and sold via a competitive bidding process. These bonds are highly valued in the marketplace in large part due to the county’s AAA credit rating.

Howard County has submitted a formal complaint against Purdue Pharma L.P., and other opioid manufacturers, as well as opioid distributors, in the Circuit Court for Howard County for their alleged role in the opioid epidemic.
