Howard County Government offices, courts, animal shelter, 50+ centers and Alpha Ridge Landfill will be closed in observance of the Memorial Day holiday on Monday, May 27. As there will be no trash, recycling, yard trim or food scrap pick-up on Memorial Day, the county’s holiday "slide” schedule will be in effect.

Howard Commuter Solutions and the Office of Transportation, in partnership with the Baltimore Metropolitan Council, will host a “Bike to Work Day” event on Friday, May 17 from 7:00 to 9:00 a.m. at Whole Foods Market in Columbia.

Today, as part of his Safe and Sound plan, Howard County Executive Calvin Ball announced he has chosen Option 3G.7.0 for his flood mitigation plan for Ellicott City. The plan includes a range of key projects, including a North Tunnel, that will decrease flood depths and ensure public safety.

Effective Saturday, June 15, 2019, Howard County’s Department of Public Works’ Bureau of Environmental Services will no longer accept curbside recycling placed out in plastic bags. Items placed out for recycling, should be placed loose in the county assigned recycling bin/cart.

Howard County Executive Calvin Ball will announce his decision for an Ellicott City flood mitigation plan on Monday.

Howard County’s Departments of Public Works and Planning and Zoning will hold a public meeting on Tuesday, May 21 to discuss the studies related to Council Bill 56-2018 (CB56-2018): Tiber Branch Watershed and Plumtree Branch Watershed Safety Act. The studies were applied to Ellicott City neighborhoods, including but not limited to, Valley Mede, Chatham, Nob Hill, Dunloggin, Dorsey’s Search, Autumn Hill, Taylor Village and Stonecrest.

A Howard County project to stabilize a slope and restore an existing storm drain outfall near 3620 Court House Drive in Ellicott City, is expected to begin on or about Monday, May 20. Weather permitting, the project is expected to be completed by late September.

A Howard County construction project to install a storm drain with minor modifications to the stormwater management pond at Springway Road and Deerfield Drive in Ellicott City, is scheduled to begin on or about Monday, May 13. Weather permitting, the project is expected to be completed by early June. 

Howard County’s Department of Public Works will hold a public meeting on Wednesday, May 22 at the Savage branch library to present the plans for a stream stabilization project and pond repair project. Construction on both projects is expected to begin in spring 2020.

Howard County Executive Calvin Ball will join a press conference, organized by the Maryland Climate Coalition, on Main Street in Ellicott City to support the Clean Energy Jobs Act. To raise awareness for the legislation and the need to address climate change, activists are undertaking a cross-state 150-mile bike ride from Annapolis to Frederick, including a stop in Ellicott City.

Ball announced that the Office of Transportation will be led by Bruce Gartner, former Executive Director of the Maryland Transportation Authority, and significant enhancements to the Regional Transportation Agency of Central Maryland bus service in Howard County as part of his vision for improved transportation.

A Howard County construction project to extend public water and sewer to Thompson Drive and Tulane Drive in Clarksville is expected to begin on or about Monday, May 13. Temporary lane shifts can be expected during construction hours, Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Howard County Executive Calvin Ball will recognize May 1st as “Zaching Day” in Howard County. Zachary Lederer started the Zaching Against Cancer Foundation (ZACF) before he passed away of brain cancer at the age of 20 in March of 2014. Zachary's birthday is May 1st and this day will be used to raise awareness and funds for cancer patients and their caregivers.

Hosted by the Howard County Early Childhood Advisory Council (ECAC) with County Executive Calvin Ball, the 2nd annual State of Early Childhood in Howard County event will be held this evening, Wednesday, May 1 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Elkridge Branch of the Howard County Library System. Featured speakers include Superintendent Michael J. Martirano and Lisa Davis of the Howard County Public School System (HCPSS); and Frank Kros of The Upside Down Organization.
