A Howard County construction project to repair a stormwater management pond in the vicinity of 5362 Briar Oak Court in Ellicott City is expected to begin on or about Monday, November 18. Weather permitting, the project is expected to be completed by late September 2020. 

Howard County Executive Calvin Ball has announced that the 2020 Major League Quidditch (MLQ) Championship will be held in Howard County on August 15 and 16, 2020 at Troy Park at Elkridge.

Howard County Executive Calvin Ball is encouraging residents to donate new, unwrapped toys to children in need this holiday season. In 2016, County Executive Ball, then a Councilmember, partnered with Toys For Tots to launch the inaugural Howard County campaign. Toys For Tots provides free toys to our families in need (children up to 14 years old) attending Howard County public schools. Over the years, the donations have helped make the holidays brighter for thousands of families.

The Howard County Department of Community Resources and Services will hold three Grant Information Sessions for non-profit organizations interested in learning more about the FY2021 Community Service Partnership (CSP) Grant Program. The meetings will be held at 9830 Patuxent Woods Drive, Room 337/338 in Columbia on Friday, November 15, 2019. Session One will run from 9:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., followed by Session Two from 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and Session Three from 2:30 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Set to begin on or about Wednesday, November 13, the Oakland Mills Tunnel will be closed to pedestrians and cyclists during construction hours, Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The project is estimated to take one to two weeks to complete.

Howard County Executive Calvin Ball will light the George Howard Building purple in honor of National Domestic Violence Awareness Month tonight and every night for the rest of October. Domestic violence harms nearly a third of women and nearly 20% of children. Since 1987, National Domestic Violence Awareness Month has been designated as an opportunity to raise awareness and promote resources for healing.

Wrestlers, age eight to 14, are invited to join Howard County’s Department of Recreation & Parks on Saturday, November 2, as it welcomes U.S. Olympic gold medalist wrestler Brandon Slay to its Gary J. Arthur Community Center for a pre-season wrestling clinic.

A Howard County construction project to extend public sewer to 3222 and 3226 Boones Lane in Ellicott City is expected to begin on or about Monday, October 28. The project involves the installation of approximately 107 linear feet of eight-inch sewer main, a four-foot diameter manhole and water and sewer house connections. Weather permitting, the project is expected to be completed by late November.

Howard County Executive Calvin Ball has issued the following statement on HCPSS’s Health Fund deficit: “The County was just informed of the HCPSS audit concern, which appears to be primarily driven by an unanticipated claims spike that exceeded actuarial projections by $10.2 million and a policy decision by HCPSS to provide $3.3 million unbudgeted employee benefit credits, per the superintendent’s memo. We feel it is appropriate for HCPSS to review its practices that resulted in the deficit in the Health and Dental Fund and develop a workable plan to address the deficit.
