This week, County Executive Ball pre-filed a resolution that allows the Board of Education to appropriate $7.2 million from its FY2019 unassigned General Fund Balance to its FY2020 Operating Budget Fixed Charges category to reduce the Howard County Public School System’s $39.2 million Health and Dental Fund deficit.

The County’s Department of Public Works will hold a public update meeting on Thursday, March 5 to discuss plans to upgrade the existing storm drain system by installing a new larger storm pipe at a site near 3605-3621 Valley Road. Construction is expected to begin in spring 2020.

The new electric vehicle charging stations at the Miller Branch Library complex in Ellicott City, are the first of several planned sites to add electric vehicle charging in partnership with Baltimore Gas and Electric Company.

Howard County Executive Calvin Ball joined the Department of Recreation & Parks and the Columbia Gardeners today to break ground on four new garden plots within the Long Reach Garden. The community garden was last significantly expanded in 2010.The garden currently contains 125 full plots, ten 20 x 12.5 half plots and five wheelchair-accessible raised beds.

After an illustrious 30-year career Chief Christine Uhlhorn has announced her retirement today. Uhlhorn is a 30-year veteran of the Howard County Department of Fire and Rescue Services and a third-generation firefighter. County Executive Calvin Ball appointed her as the first female Chief in Howard County in December of 2018 at the beginning of his first term.

A Howard County construction project to remove and replace corroding water main along the eastbound lane of Twin Rivers Road between Governor Warfield Parkway and Harpers Farm Road in Columbia is scheduled to begin on or about Monday, February 17. Weather permitting, the project is expected to be completed by mid-August 2020.

A Howard County Department of Recreation & Parks’ project to replace the pedestrian bridge located along the pathway loop in Centennial Park’s west area in Ellicott City, is expected to begin this spring. As the bridge site will be closed until the installation of the new bridge is complete, detour signs will be in place to guide park visitors.
