Howard County Executive Calvin Ball will award eight innovation grants to local organizations throughout the first week of March. Ball announced the $225,000 Innovation Fund last year to stimulate unique and creative ideas within Howard County.

Howard County Executive Calvin Ball is currently seeking a student applicant who is interested in serving on the Recreation & Parks Advisory Board. Comprised of eight members, including one student, the Board provides recommendations relating to plans, policies and programs for public recreation, and reviews plans for and holds hearings on the acquisition and development of land for public recreation and open space. The student board member will serve a one-year term from July 1, 2020 to June 30, 2021.

Howard County Executive Calvin Ball will hold his second Residents’ Budget Hearing for the FY2021 budget cycle on Thursday, March 12 at 6:00 p.m. in the Banneker Room of the George Howard Building, 3430 Court House Drive in Ellicott City.

Howard County Executive Calvin Ball is seeking adult and student applicants interested in serving on the Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday Commission. Adult voting members serve five-year terms, whereas student non-voting members serve one-year terms from July 1, 2020 to June 30, 2021. The deadline to apply is Friday, March 27, 2020.

A Howard County construction project to repair storm drain culverts at the Brampton Parkway/Red Hill Way/Yorkshire Drive traffic circle in Ellicott City is scheduled to begin on or about Monday, March 2. Weather permitting, the project is expected to be completed by mid-March 2020.

This week, County Executive Ball pre-filed a resolution that allows the Board of Education to appropriate $7.2 million from its FY2019 unassigned General Fund Balance to its FY2020 Operating Budget Fixed Charges category to reduce the Howard County Public School System’s $39.2 million Health and Dental Fund deficit.

The County’s Department of Public Works will hold a public update meeting on Thursday, March 5 to discuss plans to upgrade the existing storm drain system by installing a new larger storm pipe at a site near 3605-3621 Valley Road. Construction is expected to begin in spring 2020.

The new electric vehicle charging stations at the Miller Branch Library complex in Ellicott City, are the first of several planned sites to add electric vehicle charging in partnership with Baltimore Gas and Electric Company.

Howard County Executive Calvin Ball joined the Department of Recreation & Parks and the Columbia Gardeners today to break ground on four new garden plots within the Long Reach Garden. The community garden was last significantly expanded in 2010.The garden currently contains 125 full plots, ten 20 x 12.5 half plots and five wheelchair-accessible raised beds.
