A Howard County construction project to improve pedestrian access and safety, while providing vehicular traffic calming at several locations in Savage has begun. The Complete Street project will include curb and sidewalk improvements along and roadway resurfacing of Washington Street between Fair Street and Williams Street, and on Fair Street, Commercial Street and Foundry Street between Baltimore Street and Washington Street.

Tonight, Howard County Executive Calvin Ball delivered the inaugural Howard County “State of County” address virtually to Howard County residents. Under the theme, “We Rise Together,” Ball addressed the county’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic and announced the next major step in the county’s recovery effort, “The HoCo RISE Collaborative” an effort, chaired by former Howard County Executive Ken Ulman, comprised of five independent workgroups that will focus on: jobs and the economy, education and workforce development, healthcare, quality of life, and government response. During his speech Ball highlighted Howard County’s COVID response and recovery, economic challenges ahead, as well as non-COVID issues and opportunities such as flood mitigation in Ellicott City, environmental sustainability efforts, education funding and support services, and public safety, equity, and mental health initiatives launched during the past year. Head Start, a vital early education program of the Community Action Council of Howard County, is moving one of its locations to the Long Reach Village Center. Head Start provides free pre-school to eligible 3 to 5-year-old children and the new location will increase its capacity from 38 to 80 children.

Howard County Executive Calvin Ball and the Howard County Health Department have released guidance for the community on staying safe during the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday. The guidance stems directly from recommendations made by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

This grant from the Center for Tech and Civic Life comes from a $400 million donation from Priscilla Chan and Mark Zuckerberg to promote safe and reliable voting around the nation and provide Board of Elections officials with additional funds for staffing, training and equipment necessary to ensure a fair and equitable election.

The second phase of a Howard County construction project to rehabilitate an aging sewer main along a portion of Frederick Road in Ellicott City has begun. This phase of the project will include the relining of approximately 2,000 linear feet of 12-inch concrete sewer line, and manhole rehabilitation along the 8600 and 8700 blocks of Frederick Road.

Howard County’s Department of Public Works will hold a virtual public meeting on Tuesday, November 10th to present plans for an outfall stabilization project along Carrigan Drive in Ellicott City.

Today, County Executive Calvin Ball announced $1.5 million in Rise to the Challenge grants to 40 Howard County nonprofits.

The project is expected to begin on or about Thursday, October 22 and during the work, Woodbine Morgan Road will be closed to thru traffic. Weather permitting, the project is expected to be completed by mid-November.
