Howard County’s Department of Public Works will hold a public update meeting on Thursday, February 20 at the Roger Carter Community Center in Ellicott City, to provide an update regarding various County projects in Ellicott City along and near New Cut Road.

This week, Howard County was chosen as a Community Host for Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s (MIT) USA Learning Action Lab for master’s students. Howard County was one of only seven entities across the nation chosen as a field site for this unique opportunity.

Howard County Executive Calvin Ball joined the Department of Recreation & Parks and the Columbia Gardeners today to break ground on four new garden plots within the Long Reach Garden. The community garden was last significantly expanded in 2010.The garden currently contains 125 full plots, ten 20 x 12.5 half plots and five wheelchair-accessible raised beds.

After an illustrious 30-year career Chief Christine Uhlhorn has announced her retirement today. Uhlhorn is a 30-year veteran of the Howard County Department of Fire and Rescue Services and a third-generation firefighter. County Executive Calvin Ball appointed her as the first female Chief in Howard County in December of 2018 at the beginning of his first term.

Howard County Government offices, courts, animal shelter and 50+ centers will be closed in observance of the Presidents’ Day holiday on Monday, February 17.

A Howard County construction project to remove and replace corroding water main along the eastbound lane of Twin Rivers Road between Governor Warfield Parkway and Harpers Farm Road in Columbia is scheduled to begin on or about Monday, February 17. Weather permitting, the project is expected to be completed by mid-August 2020.

Last week, Governor Hogan recognized four Howard County Government officials among 40 professionals in the State who are now Certified Climate Change Professionals®, an international credential administered by the Association of Climate Change Officers (ACCO). The Howard County Arts Council is seeking applications from artists to fill multiple artist studio spaces at Long Reach Village Center. Applications will be accepted on an ongoing basis until studios are filled. Applicants will be evaluated based on their artistic discipline, artistic merit and commitment, as well as the appropriateness of their activities for the available space.

The legislation would alter the criteria for determining the use of funds in the Bay Restoration Fund for purposes including climate resiliency and flood control, including flood mitigation in Ellicott City. It also specifies that certain grants to local government may be used for stormwater management measures.

A new report jointly authored by the Howard County Department of Community Resources and Services’ Office of Community Partnerships and the Howard County Coalition to End Homelessness provides a new multi-year outlook on the county’s collaborative effort to build a community where no one experiences homelessness.

The Path Home outlines a five-year strategic plan to ensure that homelessness in Howard County is rare, brief and nonrecurring.
