Join us as the Office of Human Rights & Equity screens the award-winning documentary Descendant. Directed by filmmaker Margaret Brown, the film chronicles the story behind Africatown in Alabama, and the descendants of the last known enslaved Africans brought to the United States aboard the Clotilda in 1860, despite the U.S. having outlawed international slave trade.
The film features excerpts from Zora Neale Hurston's book Barracoon: The Story of the Last "Black Cargo" and interviews with Cudjo Lewis, a survivor of the Clotilda.
Reel Enlightenment attendees will have an opportunity to win a raffled copy of Zora Neale Hurston's book Barracoon: The Story of the Last "Black Cargo" book.
This screening is being presented as part of the Howard County Office of Human Rights & Equity's Reel Enlightenment Series.
Note on Admission: This event is strictly non-monetary and free to the public, made possible through the support of the county. The goal is not commercial profit, but cultural enrichment and community engagement.
