ELLICOTT CITY, MD – Howard County Executive Calvin Ball today signed an executive order establishing the impactful History and Historic Sites Advisory Workgroup. Consisting of experts, public volunteers, and Howard County Government professionals, the Workgroup is tasked with making recommendations regarding the County's preservation, acquisition, programming, partnership, research, and prioritization goals of Howard County's history and historic properties. 

As we get ready to celebrate our nation’s 250th birthday, we must reflect on our county’s history and its historical sites, and the vital role our past plays in ensuring we are and continue to move forward as an inclusive, mindful, and enlightening community. Through this Workgroup, we aim to partner with our local partners and County agencies to create a coordinated and informed approach to preserving and telling the story of Howard County.

Overseen by the County’s Department of Recreation & Parks and chaired by the department’s Acting Historical and Cultural Resources Manager Keenan Holmes, the Workgroup will consist of a representative from each of the following entities who shall be voting members:

Additionally, the following individuals have been appointed to the Workgroup as general public voting members:

  • Donna Bullatowicz
  • Mary Catherine Cochran 
  • Wayne Davis 
  • Allen Greene 
  • Greg Lepore 
  • William E. “Ed” Lilley
  • Jess McPherson; and 
  • Tyrone Tyler

In addition to Holmes, a staff member from the following County departments will also support and collaborate with the Workgroup to achieve the objectives of this executive order: 

  • Department of Recreation & Parks’ Living History and Heritage Program Coordinator/Archaeologist,
  • Department of Recreation & Parks’ Baltimore & Ohio Ellicott City Station Museum
  • Department of Planning and Zoning
