In recent months, Howard County has seen an increase in thefts of Hyundai and Kia vehicles, which is part of a national trend occurring across the U.S.

If you have a Hyundai or Kia model, consider taking the following preventive measures:

  • Use a steering wheel lock. HCPD is offering these for FREE to county residents while supplies last. Bring your license and registration to HCPD's Northern District Station and receive a FREE steering wheel lock.
  • Leave a tracking device such as an AirTag or SmartTag in an inconspicuous location in your vehicle. More info in Frequently Asked Questions below. Stay tuned to HCPD social media for potential future giveaways.
  • Purchase a security kit recently released by Hyundai and Kia. Contact a local dealership for more information.
  • Practice standard vehicle theft safety measures such as parking in a secured access lot or personal garage if you have one.

Howard County police are actively investigating these thefts and believe a majority are committed by a small number of people, mostly juveniles and young adults.

If you have any information, contact police at 410-313-STOP or HCPDCrimeTips@howardcountymd.gov.
