The Office on Aging and Independence (OAI) Digital Newsletter is a monthly email publication that keeps residents informed about upcoming events, programs, services, and important updates for older adults, caregivers, and individuals with disabilities. It’s a quick and easy way to stay connected with what’s happening at the 50+ Centers and throughout the aging and disability services network in Howard County.

The 50+ Connection is a monthly newsletter published as a two-page insert in the Howard County edition of The Beacon, a free publication dedicated to readers aged 50 and older. This publication offers timely information on programs, services, and events tailored for older adults in Howard County as well as articles promoting healthy aging and lifestyle choices.

The Commission on Aging is a 15-member volunteer advisory board to the Howard County Executive and the Office on Aging and Independence. Individuals are appointed by the County Executive and confirmed by the County Council for three-year terms. The Commission represents various age and ethnic groups, diverse professional backgrounds, and different geographical areas of the county.

The Department of Community Resources and Services is available to participate in or speak at your event. To request our involvement, please complete and submit the form below at least two weeks prior to the event, and allow up to five business days for a decision.

The Department of Community Resources and Services (DCRS) facilities, including 50+ Centers, the Loan Closet, Patuxent Woods offices, the Family Support Center, and the Multiservice Center, will make all reasonable attempts to open on time in the event of inclement weather. 

Call the DCRS Emergency Status Hotline at 410-313-7777 (voice/relay) to learn of any delayed openings or closings. Additional updates can be found at www.howardcountymd.gov/DCRS or www.Facebook.com/HoCoCommunity. 

All DCRS facilities will adhere to Howard County’s delayed opening/closing announcements as it relates to opening facilities during inclement weather.

The Office on Aging and Independence (OAI) offers a variety of volunteer opportunities for individuals who are passionate about making a difference in the lives of older adults and individuals with disabilities in Howard County. Volunteers play a vital role in supporting our programs, events, and services, from assisting at the 50+ Centers to helping with community outreach, social activities, and more. By volunteering with OAI, you’ll have the chance to give back to the community, gain valuable experience, and make meaningful connections with residents and fellow volunteers. Whether you have a few hours to spare or are looking for more consistent involvement, there’s a volunteer opportunity for you.

A client may choose to file a grievance if:  

• The client is denied service or,  

• the client is dissatisfied with the services provided.  

Client submits written complaint (within 20 days of event) to:

The written complaint must include the following minimum requirements: 

• Client’s name, address, phone number, and signature 

• Clearly identify the issues(s),  

• Contain a full statement of his/her position on the issue(s) along with pertinent facts and reasons in support of his/her position.  

Administrator:  

• Acknowledges receipt of written complaint within 10 days, 

• Reviews complaint, 

• Provides written response within 30 days.  

If complaint remains unresolved, client may, within 10 days of receipt of written response above, request meeting to provide additional information/statement of facts.  

• Howard County Office on Aging and Independence will arrange meeting to be held within 10 days of the client’s request for one. 

• Howard County Office on Aging and Independence will inform the client in writing of the date, time and place of the meeting.  

Howard County Office on Aging and Independence will issue final decision within 10 days of the requested meeting.
