PrEP Program

At the Howard County Health Department (HCHD), HIV prevention is a core part of our mission to support community health through education, testing, and prevention services. Our Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis, or PrEP Program, offers clients an amazing opportunity to take control of their sexual health and effectively protect themselves against HIV.

PrEP is a powerful prevention tool that, when used with other prevention methods like condoms, can provide greater protection against HIV. PrEP is available at the HCHD through the Health Clinic. Call 410-313-7500 for more information.

What is PrEP?

Title

PrEP Is....

Content

PrEP is not a stand-alone drug, but a prescribed way of taking commonly used HIV treatment medications to reduce the risk of getting HIV.  PrEP can be taken either as a long-acting injection or daily pill.  It has been shown to be 99% effective at preventing HIV when used correctly. PrEP is not a cure for HIV and should not be used as a substitute for using condoms to protect against getting HIV and other STIs.

Condoms are highly effective at preventing both HIV and STIs.
