UPDATE (Sept. 19): Police have charged Rondale Dickerson, 34, of Mappsville, Va. -- the man detained last night -- with first- and second-degree murder, assault, and home invasion in the fatal stabbing of Shelaya Broadwater, 44, in her apartment. Detectives learned that Dickerson and Broadwater were recently engaged. The motive remains unknown and the investigation is ongoing.

Howard County police are investigating a fatal stabbing Sept. 18 in Ellicott City in which one person was killed. The incident is not believed to be random and police have identified and detained a subject known to the victim.
At approximately 3:06 p.m., police responded to an apartment in the 3100 block of West Springs Drive for an adult female suffering from stab wounds. She was pronounced dead at the scene. There were no signs of forced entry into the apartment, and through preliminary investigation, detectives believe that the victim was targeted.
