Maribet Brute– HCHD Local Health Improvement Coalition (LHIC)

• LHIC has operated in Howard County since 2011, working toward health equity through three priority areas: 1. Healthy Beginnings (maternal/infant/family health), 2. Healthy Living (disease prevention, healthy food access), and 3. Healthy Minds (mental wellness and behavioral health). Each of these are supported by dedicated workgroups, including the Healthy Minds & Suicide Prevention Coalition and the Community Health Worker Learning Collaborative.
• Membership is free and open to anyone who lives or works in Howard County, LHIC has grown to 725 individual members and 255 organizational members as of April 2026, making it one of the largest coalitions of its kind in the state. Currently supported by quarterly meetings, workgroups, a newsletter, social media, and community outreach events.
• Maribet highlighted CAREAPP (FindHCResources.org), a free tool for finding local food, housing, and healthcare resources by ZIP code, along with recent mental health initiatives like a firearm safe storage workshop (held in March, deemed successful enough to become annual) as well as multilingual safety materials, QPR and Mental Health First Aid training support.

6. LBHA Director Updates
   1. June is Gun Violence Awareness Month. This awareness month highlights the impact of gun violence on public health. Howard County Government lit up the George Howard Building in orange in recognition of the awareness month.
   2. June is Pride Month, sometimes specified as LGBTQIA+ Pride Month, an observance dedicated to the celebration and commemorating the contributions of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) culture and community. Pride Month is observed in June, coinciding with the anniversary of the 1969 Stonewall riots, a series of gay liberation protests.

      1. We have funded two mental health first aid classes through the funding received through the LBHA Board, given by The Healthy Church and Connecting the DOTS, LLC. One has been fully paid and the other is waiting on invoice arrival. All invoices will be due by the end of June to be paid with FY26 funding.
