ELLICOTT CITY, MD – Howard County Executive Calvin Ball is seeking dedicated applicants to represent specific openings on the Historic Preservation Commission, including multiple individuals who have professional architectural or construction related experience or who live or own property in the Lawyers Hill Historic District. The deadline to apply is Friday, August 28, 2026.
The Historic Preservation Commission serves an important role in guiding the future of our historic districts and historic properties throughout the County. With the group’s input, we ensure our historic areas can serve modern needs while protecting the meaningful past they represent. I urge preservation-minded community members to volunteer their time and expertise for our most established neighborhoods.
Comprised of seven representatives, members shall include:
- professionals in or that have special interest, knowledge, or training in such fields as history, architecture, archeology, anthropology, curation, preservation, urban design or related disciplines and shall have knowledge of and have demonstrated an interest in the preservation of historic and architectural areas of the County.
- two of the seven representatives must be a resident or property owner from each local historic district..
The Commission’s responsibilities include reviewing applications for alterations to historic structures, providing advisory comments on subdivision and site development plans for historic structures, providing advice on historical resources, reviewing the historic tax credit program, and updating the historic sites inventory, among other duties outlined by the County Code.
To be eligible for consideration, candidates must be a Howard County resident, and be able to attend the Commission’s meetings, which are held on the first Thursday of each month at 7:00 p.m.

Eligible applicants are submitted to the County Executive for consideration. If approved, the appointment is forwarded to the County Council for confirmation.
