ELLICOTT CITY, MD – A Howard County construction project to install six raised intersections and one pedestrian refuge island along Cradlerock Way in Columbia, is scheduled to begin on or about Monday, July 27th. This Cradlerock Way Complete Street capital improvement project will be done in eight phases and will facilitate the safe and efficient flow of traffic and improve operations and safety in the area. Weather permitting, Phase 1 is expected to be completed by late January 2027.
Complete Streets infrastructure creates neighborhood connections and provides our residents safe and healthy transportation options to move around their communities. To help us continue to support the implementation of our Pedestrian Master Plan, Bicycle Master Plan, and Complete Streets Policy infrastructure across the county, I included $12.5 million in County funding my Fiscal Year 2027 Capital Budget for sidewalks, crosswalks, and other Complete Streets infrastructure that makes projects like this possible. Through these projects, we are working to ensure Howard County’s transportation network is accessible and reliable to all.
Signs will be posted to alert motorists and residents of the construction, and flagging operations will be in place to direct traffic through the work zone as needed during construction hours, Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
While the County and its transportation partners work hard to maintain safe traffic mobility in work zones, drivers are reminded to stay alert and look for reduced speed limits, narrow driving lanes and highway workers. Please slow down and don’t follow too closely when traveling through a work zone. Remember, work zone safety is in your hands.
The County’s Complete Streets policy strives to ensure that Howard County is a place where individuals of all backgrounds, ages and abilities can live and travel freely, safely and comfortably whether by foot, bicycle, public transportation or automobile. The policy was adopted by the County in 2019 and new design guidance in the Complete Streets Design Manual was approved in 2022.
