Rain Barrel Workshop and Give-Away (11am)

Rain barrels help catch water from your roof and store it for later use. 50 free barrels, including parts for installation and use, will be given away on a first-come, first-served basis to Howard County residents following an informational workshop.  Sign up for the rain barrel workshop at the GreenFest welcome tables between 10am -11am.  Even if you are not sure you are ready for a rain barrel, you can attend the workshop to learn about them.

Food Pantry Collection For Students

Give back to the community and donate items to the HCC Food Pantry! See their most needed item list to the right (click on the image for a printable PDF). Food items will go to students registered through Howard Community College who have a financial need. Thank you!

Free Prize Raffle

Gift certificates to local farm stores will be awarded. Enter to win by getting a ticket at a GreenFest welcome table and bringing it to the Recycling Division’s booth on the second floor.

Paper Shredding (10am-2pm)

Visit the HCC parking lot for a paper shredding event from 10am-2pm (or until trucks are full). Up to three bags or boxes of documents can be brought for free shredding. Please use your regular recycling collection for items that do not have personal information on them.

New This Year

TapSnap Photo Booth: We will have a customized GreenFest photo booth where you can drag digital props, write messages and add filters.  Print your free copy of the picture and/or share it on social media.

Repair Cafe:  12pm – 2pm. Transition Howard County is hosting a Repair Cafe. Bring small items from home that are in need of repair (e.g. toasters, lamps, clothes, toys, or electronics). Specialists will evaluate the items and fix what they can for FREE. Volunteers will also be available to provide resources and answer questions about repairs on items that are too large or not possible to bring in, such as plumbing or large furniture.

Chainsaw Sculpture Demonstrations:  A local artisan will be crafting sculptures from fallen trees and stumps. Sculpture demos will be ongoing throughout the day and sculptures will be available for purchase.

Documentary Viewing: Two films are offered this year – The Messenger, a film depicting how scientists, activists and bird enthusiasts are investigating the causes of birds vanishing at an alarming rate and possible solutions. The second film is Mr. Besley’s Forest, a documentary about Maryland’s first State Forester.

Native Bulb Planting: volunteers are needed to plant a native bulb garden on the Quad right beside the native plant vendors at GreenFest.  Drop by anytime between 10AM and 4PM and you will be put to work!  Five species of native bulbs donated by the Howard County chapter of the Sierra Club will be planted  Learn about native alternatives to tulips, crocus’s and daffodils. Try your hand at planting or sod removal and reuse.  Tools and gloves will be provided.

    GreenFest 2016

    The 9th annual GreenFest with the theme "Buy Local, Eat Local, Be Local!" was a huge success! Thank you to all of our vendors, volunteers and attendees. We couldn't have done it without you! Check our highlights below.



  • Over 2,500 attendees
  • 6 lucky people won a $100 gift certificate to a local farm
  • 22,600 lbs of paper was shredded
  • 1,500 lbs of items were donated to Goodwill
  • 50 free rain barrels were given away
  • 17 bikes were donated to Bikes For The World
  • Over 500 CDs and DVDs and 250 cases were collected for recycling through Back To The Future
  • 322 floppy disks were collected for recycling through
  • 53 pairs of eye glasses were collected for The Lions Club
  • 125 pairs of sneakers were collected for Nike Reuse-A-Shoe
  • 73 pairs of jeans were collected for the Delta Gems (the sorority recycles them!)
  • 26 cell phones were collected for domestic violence victims
