Grab A Paddle and PFD!

First take our Flat Water Paddling Basics class, then sign up for one of the exciting river float trips! Earn a certificate and patch by taking the basics class and paddling our series of four Maryland Waterways at least once within a three-year period. Most trips leave from Long Gate Park & Ride. All programs are for 10+ years; under 16 must be accompanied by a participating and REGISTERED adult. Detailed information emailed to participants within a week of the program start date. Canoe & Kayak Paddling Basics 
10 yrs + / Dates below / $35
Whether you're a new paddler or just looking to refine your skills, this flatwater paddling basics class gives you the confidence to hit the water on your own! Learn paddling techniques, self-rescue, safety and gear selection for both canoes and kayaks. Participants under 16 are placed in a canoe or tandem kayak with an accompanying registered adult.  Wear loose-fitting layers of warm clothing. This is an American Canoe Association certified instructional program.

Please note:  Flatwater Classes are for adults or adults with their children.  Everyone in the class must be registered and participating, including parents.  No children without an accompanying and registered adult.

River Trips

Float trips are a great way to take your flatwater paddling skills to the next level!  Trips range in difficulty and challenge from the scenic and tidal Float Blackwater (no river features but can be breezy) to the more technical and exciting Float Antietam with a class I-II rapid at the end.  Trips include transportation from the Long Gate Park & Ride.

Float Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge
10 yrs+ / Sep 15 / $47, tandem kayak; $68, single kayak
Paddle the tidal marshes of the Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge on this one-day flat water trip. Enjoy the scenery of mixed evergreen and deciduous forests, which are home to the Bald Eagle and endangered Delmarva Fox Squirrel. Beginner to intermediate paddlers welcome. All paddlers must complete our Canoe & Kayak Paddling Basics before the trip. Fee is per person and includes transportation, leadership and boats; bring lunch (no nut products) and beverage.

Float the Monocacy

Beginner to intermediate paddlers can discover the beauty of the scenic Monocacy River on this one-day trip. Paddle through history near the Monocacy National Battlefield. All paddlers must complete our Canoe & Kayak Paddling Basics class before the trip. Fee is per person and includes transportation, leadership and boats; bring lunch (no nut products) and beverage.

Float the Antietam
Nature enthusiasts and families, come enjoy a day of paddling on Antietam Creek near Sharpsburg, MD. Choose a canoe, double (tandem) or single kayak. Beginner to intermediate paddlers welcome - this river does feature a class 1+ rapid!  This trip is the shortest in actual distance but offers plenty of small rapids to practice your river skills.  All paddlers must complete our Canoe & Kayak Paddling Basics class before the trip. Fee is per person and includes transportation, leadership and boats; bring lunch (no nut products) and beverage.

Float the Potomac River
Nature enthusiasts and families can discover the beauty of the scenic Potomac River (northwest of Harpers Ferry) on this one-day trip. Beginner to intermediate paddlers welcome. This trip is scenic and features several miles of paddling on a wide section of the Potomac River north of Harpers Ferry with just a few small riffles.  Can be breezy and canoeists should be prepared for a full day of paddling.  All paddlers must complete our Canoe  & Kayak Paddling Basics class before the trip. Fee is per person, and includes transportation, leadership and boats; bring lunch (no nut products) and beverage.

Please Note:
  • If a program is full, place your name on the Wait List!  There is no charge, and you can sign up on the Wait List online or by phone (410-313-7275).  Wait List customers are considered first should a spot become available.
