Senior Assisted Living Subsidy

The Senior Assisted Living Subsidy (SALS) program provides financial support for low and moderate-income older adults in assisted living programs that are licensed by the Maryland Department of Health. The subsidy uses State funds on behalf of eligible individuals to defray the cost of assisted living services. Grant funding is limited. Currently there is a waiting list.

In order to be eligible for a subsidy, the individual must be:

  • At least 62 years of age and is approved for entrance into or is currently a resident in an assisted living program that has entered into a service agreement with the Howard County Office on Aging and Independence.
  • In need of assistance with activities of daily living provided by the assisted living program which include bathing, grooming, dressing, and getting around.
  • Financially eligible for subsidy:
    • To be financially eligible, an applicant's net monthly income may not be higher than 60 percent of the State median income and assets may be no greater than $20,064 if single, or $26,400 if a couple. A personal allowance, monthly medical expenses, and other costs are considered in determining eligibility.
