ELLICOTT CITY, MD – Howard County’s “20 Minute Cleanup” is back for its seventh year and Howard County Executive Allan H. Kittleman is urging everyone to step outside this Earth Day and help clean up our community by picking up litter for just 20 minutes on Friday, April 22.

“Since this county-wide project began in 2010, more than 9,000 people have participated, helping to make Howard County a little cleaner and greener,” said Kittleman. “I hope everyone will take the time this Earth Day and see the impact this small effort can have. Remember, you can make every day Earth Day by picking up trash and litter wherever and whenever you see it.”

Individuals, groups of friends, business colleagues, students and families are invited to choose a convenient time to safely pick up litter around their office building, school or neighborhood and then see the difference just 20 minutes can make. Trash and recyclables collected during the project should be disposed of using regular business or residential pick-up. The County encourages all participants to recycle everything they can.

Participating is easy – simply do your cleanup and then share your results with us either via email at or on Twitter by using @livegreenhoward. Please include the number of people who participated, how many bags of trash/recycling you collected and any photographs. All participants will be acknowledged and thanked on the County’s website, and will be featured in the Howard County Times.

“If you are not able to join us on the April 22nd, I encourage you to pick another day that week to gather up your friends and head outdoors to help clean up and beautify your community,” Kittleman added.
