Elkridge Main Street: a path to renewal

The Department of Planning and Zoning (DPZ), in partnership with Councilman Jon Weinstein and Patapsco Heritage Greenway, held a community meeting on May 9th and received input from over 75 residents and stakeholders on the boundaries and scope of a small area plan for the main street and surrounding area of Elkridge.

The Department of Planning and Zoning led a SWOT (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats) exercise to hear participants thoughts on how their community fits into each category. Participants then voted on the items identified. See the top three results from each category below.

Strengths:

  • Historic
  • Location
  • Parks

Weaknesses:

  • No high school
  • Overcrowding
  • Lack of sidewalks

Opportunities:

  • Calm traffic
  • Better pedestrian access
  • History

Threats:

  • Over-development
  • Zoning
  • Limited capital spending

Next Steps:

DPZ will seek a consultant over the summer to draft the Elkridge Main Street Area Plan. Once a consultant is selected, a kick-off meeting will be scheduled to begin the planning process.

We appreciate the community’s interest and participation in the first meeting and encourage your continued involvement. Please sign up here if you would like to receive updates as the planning process continues.
