HEALTH Howard County has a network of health care resources to fit almost every need, and some agencies deliver state and federally funded services. You'll find information here about a range of options for prevention and treatment. COMMUNICABLE DISEASES HIV Counseling Each health center offers free HIV counseling and testing; call your nearest center for information. Health and Wellness for Elderly See Seniors. Immunizations Call the Health Department center nearest you for information about influenza and pneumonia vaccines available at low cost to seniors and persons with chronic medical conditions. Sexually Transmitted Diseases The Columbia Health Center (410-313-7500) provides information and free treatment of sexually transmitted diseases. Tuberculosis The Health Department provides free screenings and treatment for tuberculosis. Call the health center nearest you. FUNCTIONAL OR MENTAL IMPAIRMENTS Personal Care Functionally impaired persons of any age who are eligible for medical assistance can receive personal care; call Adult Community Evaluation Services (410-313-6450). Screening for Nursing Homes Potential or current nursing home residents with a diagnosis of mental illness or mental retardation can receive pre-admission screening and an annual resident review. Call Adult Community Evaluation Services (410-313-6450). Condom Education "Three for Free" condoms and information are free from any Health Department office. Family Planning Women who do not desire pregnancy can call the nearest health center for information about Family Planning Clinics offered on a sliding fee scale at each health center. Prenatal Care The Columbia Health Center offers maternity clinics for pregnant women. Call the health center nearest you for information. Fees are based on a sliding scale. Coping with Addictions The Addictions Services Center (410-313-6202) provides confidential evaluations, counseling, aftercare, relapse prevention and information and referral for county residents and their families dealing with alcohol, drug and other addictions. Services include educational activities for schools and community groups, evaluation, referral and treatment for DWI cases, and counseling and referral for inmates at the Detention Center and Clifton T. Perkins Hospital Center. Fees are on a sliding scale. Substance Abuse Information A bi-monthly Partnership Forum allows citizens, community organizations and the government to share information and address alcohol, tobacco, and other drug abuse problems. Substance Abuse Impact Services (410-313-3784) facilitates this group. Substance Abuse Issues Community organizations interested in substance abuse issues can call the office of Substance Abuse Impact Services (410-313-3784) for advice and information about available grants and services in the county. "Not My Kid" Community Support for Parents This program provides speakers to address parents on issues of alcohol and substance use by juveniles and provides supportive strategies for parental intervention. Contact the State's Attorney's Office or call the Office on Substance Abuse Impact Services (410-313-2784) for more information. Blood Pressure Screening Any resident can walk in at a local fire station to request a free blood pressure reading. Call Fire and Rescue (410-313-6000) to arrange a screening for your community or group. CPR Mannequins Mannequins may be borrowed from Fire Training (410-313-6030) for cardiopulmonary resuscitation practice. Consumer Health Books, magazines, pamphlets, video cassettes and audio cassettes are available at all Howard County Library locations. An up to date health data base is available 24 hours a day through the Library's on-line catalog. Crisis Intervention Community workers at the Community Action Council (410-313-6440) interview callers to determine needs and give information or refer clients to appropriate, available resources. Free Mammograms Eligible women ages 50 and over can receive free mammograms from the Health Department (410-313-7500). Health Education Health educators from the Health Department (410-313-6365) make presentations and provide information on health issues such as AIDS, cancer, smoking, rabies and prevention of teen pregnancy. Healthful Eating Cooperative Extension (410-313-1911) provides classes, newsletters and information on topics such as food preservation, nutrition and health, diet and disease and food safety. Healthy Families The Community Action Council links new families/parents with resources and services to help them with the daily challenges of raising a new baby and to provide a healthy and safe environment for the child. Injury Prevention Awareness Fire and Rescue (410-313-6040) provides free information and programs for your school, church, community or service group about injury prevention awareness. Wellness Programs Recreation and Parks (410-313-4718) offers classes in fitness, wellness and low-fat cooking. |
