Community Organization of the Year

Congratulations Elkridge Adult Athletic Association!
Thirty years ago, a group of men got together to start a softball league. At the end of their first year, they had $45 left in their treasury, and they donated the money to the new Rockburn Branch Park. Today the Elkridge Adult Athletic Association (EAAA) has moved far past managing softball leagues and now devote their time to community service. For the past 16 years EAAA has organized and hosted Haunted Halloween in Rockburn Park. They also organize the popular Easter Egg Hunts and summer concerts. Each year they give approximately $10,000 back to the community to organizations like Dick Gelfman’s Ride Across MD, the MS Walk, the Elkridge Food Bank, Elkridge Volunteer Fire Department and the American Cancer Society. They take the “plunge” every winter for Special Olympics and award college scholarships to local students. In 2007 alone, they donated over 1,500 hours of service to their community.

Off-Leash Area at Worthington Park

Managed deer hunts: Managed deer hunts at the Worthington Landfill are being carried out in cooperation between Howard County Police Dept., the Department of Public Works and the Department of Recreation and Parks. Thirty-four deer were removed from the Worthington Landfill site in 2006, a closed landfill within the heavily developed Ellicott City area. Deer-vehicle collisions, complaints from nearby residents, and browse damage to the forested stream buffers nearby are all concerns which would be remedied by reducing the herd at this site. Please note: Mar. 25 the Off-Leash Area will close at 3:30 p.m. and reopen at 7:00 a.m. the following morning.

A Few Important things to Remember!

  • Don't disappoint your dog. If it's raining or snowing, or the ground is damp, always call the Inclement Weather line, 410-313-4455, to verify that the Off-Leash Area is open before you go. The area may be closed due to rain, snow and/or muddy conditions.
  • Children under the age of 12 are not allowed in the Off-Leash Area. Dogs can and will play roughly and it is not safe for the children or the dog owners.
  • It is your responsibility to clean up after your dog! No one else should or will do that for you.
  • Dogs have different styles of play. Know your dog before you visit the park and be sensitive to other dogs and their owners. Watch your dog closely and be prepared to intervene if necessary.
  • '07-'08 Off-Leash Permit
