Eligible criteria:

• Live in Howard County.
• Are pregnant, a new mother, or a child under five years of age.
• Have a nutritional need.
• Have a household gross income that is less than or equal to the income guidelines.
• Receive food stamps, medical assistance, temporary cash assistance, or participate in the Maryland’s Children’s Health Program, energy assistance, free or reduced school lunch, etc.

Note: Income Guidelines are federally determined.

• Milk
• Eggs
• Cheese
• 100% fruit or vegetable juice
• Cereal
• Peanut butter or dried beans and peas and carrots and tuna for exclusively breastfeeding mothers.

• Nutrition education.
• Improve your family’s health through better nutrition.
• Give birth to a healthier baby and be healthier yourself during pregnancy.
• Feed your baby better.
• Help you children eat healthier.
• Free healthy foods.
• Counseling and support to breastfeeding mothers.
• Referrals to other health and social agencies.

Studies show that:

WOMEN – Participants in the WIC program have longer pregnancies with fewer low birth-weight babies and infant’s deaths.

Participants have healthier diets during pregnancy.

Breastfeeding participants receive counseling and support through the WIC program.

INFANTS - Infants weigh more at birth. WIC infant’s mothers receive advice on starting solid foods and support for breastfeeding.

CHILDREN - Children enrolled in WIC have less incidence of anemia. They are screened and referred for health care if they have growth problems or health problems.
