Environmental and sustainability work in Howard County involves nearly all of our County departments, especially Office of Environmental Sustainability, Planning and Zoning, Public Works, Recreation and Parks, and Economic Development. The County aims to lead by example and challenges citizens to embrace environmental stewardship and sustainability.  

The County's Environmental Sustainability initiatives follow the triple bottom line approach – all of our work aims to protect Howard County's environment, save money and protect the health and welfare of all Howard County citizens. Stream ReLeaf Program
Stream ReLeaf is a program designed to enhance stream buffers —  protective strips of trees, shrubs and other vegetation along a stream — by providing free native trees and shrubs to homeowners.
Alpha Ridge Landfill Residents' Convenience Center

The following materials are accepted from Howard County residents. Residents using the landfill are required to show their driver's licenses as proof of residence in Howard County.

Tree Canopy Program

The Tree Canopy Program aims to create and enhance tree canopy- the layer of leaves, branches, and stems of trees that cover the ground when viewed from above- throughout the County. Tree Canopy provides many benefits to communities including improving water quality, saving energy, lowering city temperatures, reducing air pollution, enhancing property values, providing wildlife habitat, facilitating social and educational opportunities, and providing aesthetic benefits.

Battery Recycling
Have old batteries and don’t know what to do with them? Consider customer take-back programs at retail stores such as Home Depot, My Organic Market, and Radio Shack.
Types of Stormwater Management Structures

The operation and maintenance for the specific stormwater management structure.

Stormwater Management Structures
With proper stormwater management, rain water is directed into a local stormwater management structure where it is stored and slowly released into our nearby streams. As stormwater is stored in these structures, sediment and other pollutants have an opportunity to settle out, thus improving water quality.
Middle Patuxent Environmental Area
Howard County Department of Recreation and Parks manages the 1021 acre Middle Patuxent Environmental Area (MPEA) in cooperation with the Middle Patuxent Environmental Foundation. Click the link for more infroamtion about this site
Rigid Plastics
Howard County residents may now recycle many new types of plastic material curbside and at the Alpha Ridge Landfill Residents' Convenience Center.
Stormwater Management Division
The Stormwater Management (SWM) division strives to advance the quality of life for the citizens of Howard County through the improvement and management of the quality and quantity of water that originates in, falls onto, or passes through the county on its way to the Chesapeake Bay.
