Land Management Division
Mission Statement: The mission of the Land Management Division is to provide a healthy, attractive and safe landscape within our park system and for all government facilities.
The Land Management Division is divided into two sections, the Horticultural Section and the Mowing Section.
Horticulture
The Horticulture Section is headed by a horticulturist who is responsible for developing Best Management Practices (BMPs) for the vast assortment of trees, shrubs, and flowerbeds throughout the County park system as well as all County buildings. The horticulturist is responsible for the selection of suitable plant materials for all projects executed in-house and also reviews and makes recommendations on those designed and executed externally.
We have many sites where we actively seek volunteers to help maintain various garden beds through our new Adopt-A-Plot program. If you are interested in becoming an active participant or if you have questions or concerns regarding horticultural practices in our parks or government buildings please contact Timothy W. Overstreet at 410 313-4733. If you have general plant or horticulture questions, related to home landscape care, contact the Howard County Cooperative Extension or call 410-313-2707.
Mowing
The Mowing Section is responsible for mowing all turf within the County park system and all County building grounds. They review construction plans in order to make ease of maintenance and efficiency a number one priority. In addition, they provide field assistance to the Natural Resources Section in such areas as emergency tree removal, site preparation for reforestation, meadow management for MPEA, special events and a broad range of construction projects.
The mowing staff also assists with snow removal and many field maintenance issues related to natural resource management. The contact person for the Mowing Operations section is Joann Frush and she can be reached at 410 313-4733. If you have general turf questions related to home lawn care, contact the Howard County Cooperative Extension or call 410-313-2707.
