About the Program

The Department of Recreation and Parks purchases land, as it becomes available and as budgets permit, for future parks. The Department wisely purchased land in the 1970’s and 1980’s when the cost of land in Howard County was considerably less per acre than current market prices. Funds are usually not available for planning and construction of these properties for many years.

When land is purchased, it normally has a house and possible outbuildings on the property. These houses may be in isolated areas, so to enhance the security of these properties, the Department initiated a house rental program in December 1994. (In some instances, the vacant house may be used as a caretaker arrangement if there is a need for services of this nature.) Not only is there a presence in the house, there is also someone to keep an eye on the property itself.

The Department has a Requirements Contract with a realtor to solicit tenants for our rental houses.

Tenants are responsible for maintaining the property, paying their utilities, mowing the grass, etc.—all as outlined in the Lease Agreement.

As properties become available for rent, they will be posted on this web site. Be sure to check this site frequently should you have an interest in renting one of our current properties or a newly acquired property.
