Communications Division The Communications Division is a mixture of specially trained call-takers, dispatchers and supervisors who handle all police, fire and emergency medical services (EMS) calls 24 hours a day, seven days a week. During 2002, communications personnel answered and processed a total of 302,260 police, fire and EMS calls. The average call-answering time was only four seconds per call. Communications personnel base their primary 911 operations out of the main Public Safety Answering Point, also known as the 911 Center, in Ellicott City. Personnel also maintain a fully functional Alternate Public Safety Answering Point for emergency purposes at another location within the county. The Division is managed on a day-to-day basis by a combination of police and fire supervisors, under the direct command of a police lieutenant. During 2002, the division increased its ability to provide service to the public by upgrading its Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) technology. |
