Laser Speed Camera Survey Form

A survey by the National SAFE KIDS Campaign showed that two-thirds of all vehicles traveling through school zones were traveling faster than the posted speed limit.

The faster a vehicle is traveling when it strikes a pedestrian, the more severe and potentially fatal the injuries will be. The likelihood of a pedestrian being killed when hit by a vehicle traveling at 20 mph is about 5 percent, but at 40 mph is about 80 percent.

During the school year of 2005-2006, the Howard County Police Department conducted an automated speed enforcement program in school zones, by utilizing a laser speed camera operated by a Howard County Police Certified Laser Operator. Warnings were issued to motorist who exceeded the posted speed limit by at least 10 mph. No fines or points were associated with the notice.

We would like to hear public opinion about the program.

1. Were you aware that an automated speed program was conducted in Howard County last school year? Yes No
2. Did you like the photo-speed program at the schools last year? Yes No
3. Do you think the program improved the safety of the streets for our children? Yes No
4. Do you think the program modified driver behavior around school zones? Yes No
5. Should HCPD continue to try to get photo-speed legislation? Yes No
6. If legislation were granted, would you like HCPD to enhance the program to include other roadways (neighborhood roads, highways, etc)? Yes No

Do you have any suggestions of ways to encourage motorists to slow down and be more alert for pedestrian traffic?

PLEASE help us keep the children in Howard County safe. Remember to slow down in school zones and encourage anyone who drives your vehicle to do the same.
