Police Officer of the Month July 2004 Police Officer Amy Meek has been selected as police officer of the Month for July 2004. Officer Meek’s performance in July warranted this recognition. In one case, Officer Meek responded to a fight call in Columbia and quickly identified a suspect and victim in the incident. Through investigation, Officer Meek learned of another person who had been apparently stabbed in the incident but had left before her arrival. She located the subject at a local hospital and notified CIB. Detectives credited the closure of the case to Officer Meek’s initial response, quick action, and identification of the victims, suspects and witnesses. In another case, Officer Meek responded to a serious motor vehicle collision where the alleged driver was taken by helicopter to shock trauma in serious condition. Officer Meek inspected the wrecked vehicle and noticed damage that lead her to believe someone else was driving the car. Officer Meek identified a second subject who claimed to have been the passenger. The subject appeared to be intoxicated and did not have injuries consistent with the damage on the passenger side. Following an investigation, Officer Meek arrested the man for DWI. Later in the month, Officer Meek investigated a report of an ex-parte violation. While she was at first unsuccessful at apprehending the suspect, who had made death threats and allegedly was in possession of a handgun, Officer Meek continued making area checks and remained close to the victim’s residence. The suspect returned and was arrested by Officer Meek, with the assistance of other officers, for violating the protective order. While a handgun was not found to have been involved, Officer Meek demonstrated her concern for the victim and community by her actions until the suspect was in custody. In addition to her patrol assignment in Columbia, Police Officer Meek volunteered her off-duty time to work speed enforcement and DWI enforcement details. During these details, Officer Meek issued 73 traffic citations and arrested two suspended drivers. For the month, Officer Meek handled 75 calls for service, made 12 arrests (three for DWI) and 114 traffic stops, conducted 43-foot patrols and issued two criminal citations. Police Officer Amy Meek’s performance during this month demonstrates her dedication to the citizens of Howard County and the police department. A high standard of pro-active police enforcement coupled with sound judgment and determination has earned Officer Meek this deserving recognition. Writen By PFC David Proulx |
