Police Officer of the Month

September 2002

Chief Livesay has selected Police Officer Brandi Kurty as Police Officer of the Month for September 2002. Officer Kurty produced an exceptional amount of work and demonstrated excellent enforcement of both traffic and criminal violations, including a total of 10 arrests.

Some of Officer Kurty’s more significant cases for the month of September 2002 include:

Burglary Arrest: On September 6th at approx 0348 hours, Officer Kurty was on routine patrol on W/B Route 40 when she observed a suspicious white male staggering toward hedges near the Goodyear Tire Company parking lot.

Officer Kurty approached the subject as he sat on a curb. Officer Kurty knew the area had experienced several burglaries and attempted burglaries recently. The suspect had distinctive tattoos and features that appeared to match printed videotape footage from a burglary at the First Union Bank on Baltimore National Pike.

Officer Kurty arrested and transported the subject to Southern District. The subject confessed to the burglary at First Union Bank after being interviewed by CIB.

Motor Vehicle Violation/DWI Arrest: On September 11th a citizen called in a possible DWI on Route 40 at I-70. Officer Kurty stopped the vehicle; made contact with the driver and determined the driver was under the influence of alcohol. Officer Kurty conducted field sobriety tests on the driver and he was placed in custody for DWI. The driver submitted to an intoximeter test with a result of .18 BAC.

Insight CDS Violation/Arrest: On September 28th Officer Kurty was working stationary radar with another officer in the area of Rt. 40 and Greenway Drive. Officer Kurty stopped a vehicle for a speed violation. While stopping the vehicle she noticed furtive movements from the driver and it appeared as though the driver was placing something under his seat. Upon contact with the driver, Officer Kurty observed him to be nervous and shaking. Officer Kurty searched the vehicle and located a small bag of suspected CDS (marijuana) and a smoking device. The driver was arrested and charged with the CDS violation and related violations.

Insight CDS Violation/Arrest: On September 30th, Officer Kurty was on routine patrol when she stopped a vehicle on Rt. 40 at Frederick Rd for a moving violation (weaving). Officer Kurty made contact with the driver, and called for a K-9. A K-9 scan was conducted on the vehicle with a positive reaction from the K-9 for the presence of CDS. The suspect vehicle was searched. A bag that contained probable CDS (marijuana) and 2 smoking devices was located between the front seats. The suspect was arrested and charged with possession of CDS and CDS paraphernalia.

As a relatively new Police Corp graduate, Officer Kurty shows excellent promise. She is energetic and possesses an excellent attitude.

CONGRATULATIONS ON A JOB WELL DONE!
