Women’s History Month Essay Contest Begins

ELLICOTT CITY, MD – Howard County’s Commission for Women invites Howard County students (public, private and home-schooled), grades 6-12, to participate in its annual essay contest in honor of Women’s History Month. Celebrated each March, this year’s national theme is “Writing Women Back into History.” The deadline for submission is Wednesday, January 20.

In celebration of the 30th anniversary of the National Women’s History Project, this year’s theme encompasses all of the specific fields which have been highlighted over the years, including science, arts, sports and politics. Essays should describe either a contemporary or historical American woman who has made a difference in any field selected by the writer.

Completed essays should be sent to women@howardcountymd.gov or mailed to the Commission for Women Student Essay Contest, 6751 Columbia Gateway Drive, Suite 300, Columbia, MD 21046 and must be received by the January 20 deadline.

First place winners in each grade category (6-8 and 9-12) will receive a $200 US Savings Bond and will be invited to read their essays at the Women’s Hall of Fame induction ceremony on Thursday, March 11 at 7:30 p.m. at Howard Community College.

For contest rules and judging criteria, contact the Department of Citizen Services at 410-313-6400, or visit the Department’s website at www.howardcountymd.gov/CitizenServices/.
