Ulman Reminds Residents to Respect the Election Process

ELLICOTT CITY, MD – Howard County Executive Ken Ulman was joined by Chairpersons from both the Howard County Republican and Democratic Central Committees today, to urge residents to respect the election process. The event was held in Ellicott City between two homes--one home displaying an Obama-Biden sign, the other a McCain-Palin sign. Residents were reminded that stealing and/or destroying political signs is a crime and one that is enforced by the Howard County Police Department. In the past two months, County Police have taken 15 reports of theft and vandalism to political signs posted in the County. This past Friday, two individuals were arrested and charged with theft for allegedly stealing political signs.

“This is not how the system is supposed to work,” said Ulman. “We expect people to respect one another’s views and their Constitutional right to free speech, and when people steal or tear down campaign sides they are doing just the opposite.”

Also, the Board of Elections has asked parties and candidates to be aware that all political signs must be removed immediately after Election Day, Tuesday, November 4. On Election Day, polls in Howard County will be open from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.; however, to avoid possible delays caused by a large turnout, residents are asked to try and vote between 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.

To find your polling place, get a copy of a sample ballot, check your registration, or find out more information about voting in Howard County, visit the Board of Elections website at www.howardcountymd.gov/BOE or call them at 410-313-5820.
