NEWS RELEASE September 10, 2008 Media Contact: Kevin Enright, Director, Office of Public Information, 410-313-2022County Funds Help Renovate Howard Community College’s Children’s Learning Center ELLICOTT CITY, MD – County Executive Ken Ulman will join Howard Community College President Dr. Kate Hetherington this afternoon for a ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate HCC’s newly renovated Children’s Learning Center. The County’s Fiscal Year 2008 Capital Budget provided $792,000 in bond funds to help construct the Children’s Learning Center, while the College funded the remaining $100,000. "The County is proud to have funded a major portion of the Children's Learning Center renovation,” said Ulman. “This center allows both children and adults the opportunity to learn; while their children are receiving top-flight care at the Center, many parents will then have the time to receive an excellent education at HCC." The recently renovated wing of the Center includes three infant rooms, two infant sleeping rooms, a 3- and 4-year-old combination room, a multi-use intelligent classroom, observation booths for all rooms, a food prep area and storage rooms. The Center also houses two 2-year-old rooms, one 3-year-old room, one 4-year-old preschool room, two indoor play areas, a reception area, two offices, a conference room, a main kitchen area and laundry/storage area. The Children’s Learning Center is an educational program serving Howard Community College students and employees, as well as the local community. It is a full-year program open Mondays through Fridays for children 6 weeks to 5 years of age, that provides high quality care in a safe and nurturing environment. The Center’s program promotes the positive growth and development of the whole child through a child-centered and developmentally appropriate curriculum. In addition, the Center works cooperatively with the HCC Early Childhood Program and other college programs, while providing a stimulating lab school environment. The Center is accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC). |
