Volunteer and career fire teams compete for top honor

Annual Farm City “Iron Chef” Cookoff Turns up the Heat at the Howard County Fair

ELLICOTT CITY, MD – Howard County’s fourth annual Farm-City “Iron Chef” Cookoff will be one of the highlights of the Howard County Fair. The cookoff will take place on Thursday, August 7 at 6 p.m., in front of the 4-H Activity Building near the fairground’s main entrance. A takeoff on the Food Channel’s popular “Iron Chef” program, the event will feature a “heated” competition between four teams with members representing career and volunteer Fire & Rescue Services personnel.

Teams for this year’s competition are:

“Boulevard BBQ Boys” from Station 1 in Elkridge
FF Robert Grant; Lt. Joseph Calo; FF James Joyce

“Jacks of all Trades” from Station 10 in Rivers Park
FF Barry Griffin; Lt. Daniel Natoli; FF Chris Meyer

“Keep the Chief in the Kitchen” from Administrative Headquarters
Lt. William Robinson; Chief Joseph Herr; Nancy Myers

“Keep the HEAT in the Kitchen” from Fire & Rescue’s Public Information Office
FF Cory Hutchcroft; Bill Mould, Battalion Chief Christine Ulhorn-List

The cookoff will be a friendly, fun competition to showcase local farm products. Each “Iron Chef” will be given an identical main secret ingredient and then select from a bounty of fresh locally-grown vegetables and herbs to prepare a dish for competition. Food preparation will conclude at 7 p.m., when the audience and official judges will evaluate each entry and announce the winner.

This year’s Farm-City Celebration officially gets underway on Tuesday, September 23. The 12-day event, which concludes on October 4, highlights the vital farm-city connection and will feature activities that appeal to both adults and children. A complete schedule of events will be available at the cookoff or at the county’s Agricultural Preservation booth inside the Main Exhibition Hall.
