NEWS RELEASE May 8, 2008 Media Contacts: Kevin Enright, Director, Office of Public Information, 410-313-2022Carl Balser, Chief, Division of Transportation Planning, Dept. of Planning and Zoning, 410-313-4310 Howard County Adds Second Bus for Baltimore City Medical Trips ELLICOTT CITY, MD – Howard County Executive Ken Ulman announced today that a second bus will be added to the HT Ride Baltimore City Shuttle for medical trips effective immediately. HT Ride, the curb-to-curb transportation service for seniors and people with disabilities in Howard County, has experienced an increase in demand over the years and a second bus will provide for greater access and less travel time. “We are fortunate to reside in close proximity to some the world’s leading medical experts and facilities,” said County Executive Ulman. “Howard County has always been a supporter of regional transportation and our Shuttle is one more example of how neighboring Counties can work together to better serve the entire community.” For the past several years Howard County has extended its services across jurisdictional lines to ensure seniors and passengers with disabilities are able to meet their medical needs. Many Howard County residents travel to Baltimore City on a weekly, monthly and annual basis for various medical treatments with specialists at area hospitals. Up until now, Howard County residents have utilized one vehicle on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays to travel to and from the City, sometimes starting as early as 6:30 a.m. There are currently two morning trips to Baltimore and two afternoon return trips to Howard County. Earlier this year, Howard County was awarded a Federal Transit Administration grant administered by the State that will be used to purchase a vehicle and add service to the HT Ride Baltimore City Shuttle service on Tuesdays and Thursdays, thus allowing customers more flexibility in scheduling their medical appointments. The expanded service is expected to begin in late summer. For more information on Howard Transit contact the customer service at 1-800-270-9553 or visit www.howardtransit.com. |
