State Awards $50,000 Grant to Howard County Department of Recreation & Parks

ELLICOTT CITY, MD – The Maryland State Board of Public Works recently awarded a $50,000 grant to Howard County’s Department of Recreation & Parks to fund a feasibility study to determine aquatic needs in Howard County. The study will look at current facilities, determine if additional facilities are needed, suggest possible locations for new facilities and provide options for financing the building and operation of an aquatic facility in Howard County.

“Since I took office, and especially at our public forum and again through e-mails from citizens sharing their budget priorities with me, one theme was repeated over and over again,” said County Executive Ken Ulman, “the community’s desire for a 50-meter Olympic-sized pool and more publicly accessible aquatic facilities in the County. This grant award will give us an opportunity to evaluate what we already have, find out what we need, and determine just how critical that need is.”

Counsilman-Hunsaker was awarded the contract to conduct the feasibility study. The results of the study will be presented to the Recreation & Parks Advisory Board at one of their regular meetings this summer. Once the draft report is submitted, it will be available for review on the County’s website and the Recreation & Parks Advisory Board will schedule a public hearing on the proposal.
