National County Government Week Discovery Fair Since April is the “Month of the Young Child”, Howard County’s Office of Children’s Services, the Early Childhood and Child Care Coalition, Howard County Library and Maryland Family Magazine will sponsor this Discovery Fair to help prepare young children for school. National County Government Week Child Safety Seat Check Car crashes remain the number one killer of children ages 3-14 in the United States. To reduce the risk of injury and death to children who ride in vehicles, Howard County Government and Safe Kids Howard County will sponsor a child safety seat check. National County Government Week Howard County GreenFest GreenFest, a free family event in celebration of Earth Month, features informatinal displays, children’s activities and live animal displays! A free shredding event will take place as well. This year's GreenFest theme is "Green Buildings – Inside and Out". Walks-R-Us We are encouraging residents to "Step Up to Health" by participating in a county-wide walking program. People seeking ways to become more active often overlook the most basic of all exercises, walking. It's easy, convenient and takes as much or as little time as you have. This starter kit includes a "Step Up to Health" tee shirt, water bottle, maps, logs and training information. Individuals and families are welcome! Come Home to Howard County Housing Fair This free event is an opportunity for attendees to learn about renting, buying and fixing up a home. There will be house lottery drawings where pre-qualified winners will have the opportunity to buy a new or renovated home at a substantially reduced price. National County Government Week "The Listening Place" Child Advocacy Center Open House County Executive Ken Ulman will proclaim April “Child Abuse and Neglect Prevention Month” and talk about the “Blue Ribbons for Kids Campaign,” adopted in Howard County to bring attention to the plight of children who are victims of child abuse and neglect. The Center was opened in 1991 as a place where children who are victims can be interviewed and examined in a safe, friendly environment. Spring Fling 10k Trail Race Beginning and experienced runners are invited to participate in this unique 10k cross-country race. Duel at the Rock This unique event challenges participants on a 6-mile bike loop. This all-trail event offers a variety of obstacles and challenges. Wine in the Woods Come celebrate the 16th year, of an event whose charm and character has aged to perfection. Sunday in the Park Join the Department of Recreation & Parks for a not so scary Halloween event for the entire family. This "best bargain in seasonal entertainment" includes treats for little tricksters, buried "treasures," games, prizes, musical and roving entertainers, face painting and more. Visit the cave-maze, take a cakewalk, ride a pony or train, and laugh along with a puppet show. Enjoy games, music and merriment while feasting on seasonal delights available at the festival. Children can dress in their favorite costumer and set out safely on the Trick or Treat Trail (must be accompained by an adult).
