Healthy Howard Restaurants

The following food establishments are among the first batch of restaurants who have been recognized as a Healthy Restaurant. Each awardee receives a congratulatory letter from Health Officer, Dr. Peter Beilenson, two Healthy Howard decals for store front display, and a listing on the Healthy Howard web page.

The first of the Health Howard Programs, Healthy Restaurants was launched April 6, 2007. Healthy Restaurant is a voluntary program in which restaurants and other partner food establishments agree to:

Be Trans-Fat Free (0.5 grams or less of artificial trans fat)

Display Nutritional and Caloric Information of Healthy Menu Options (based on HCHD nutritional evaluation)

Provide at least 2 Healthy Menu Options

Pass food and hygiene inspections without substantive violations (no more than 1 critical violation in the past 3 inspections and have an average of 4 non critical violations over the past 3 inspections).

You will know a Healthy Howard Restaurant by the decal located at the front of the establishment and/or on the menu.

You will also know which menu items are “healthy options” because they will advertised in the restaurant.

To be qualified as a “healthy option,” the menu item:

MUST BE:
-Up to 750 calories (or less)
-Less than 30% of calories from fat
-Less than 10% of calories from saturated fat
-Up to 1050 mg of sodium

INCLUDE:
-Lean protein (e.g. eggs, white meat poultry, lean beef)
-Vegetables (e.g. mushroom or peppers in omelets) and/or
-Fresh fruit (e.g. parfaits with light yogurt, fruit salad)

NOT INCLUDE:
-Deep-fried items

EACH LUNCH/DINNER ENTREE MUST:
-Up to 750 calories (or less)
-Less than 30% of calories from fat
-Less than 10% of calories from saturated fat
-Less than 1050 mg of sodium
