At Historic Savage Mill, shoppers can find antiques, artist studios, home furnishing stores—and the ever-present spirits from the Mill’s heyday in the 19th century…

Like the three Ellicott brothers that founded a mill in the Maryland town that bears their name, the four Williams brothers borrowed $20,000 from John Savage in 1820 to create a textiles weaving mill that wove canvas for clipper ships, Civil War tents and silent movie screens before World War II signaled the demise of the demand for woven cotton. Today, Savage Mill is a lovely hub of restaurants, bakeries, clothes stores, high quality antiques Howard County is famous for…and ghosts!

To chronicle the Mill’s history as well as their unworldly past, a new ghost tour has been created with true stories about Mill workers and their sometimes violent end. The ghost of the Tower is a woman who was in charge of the Mill workers’ children back in the 19th century…until falling to her death on the tower’s stairs…another tower houses a bell that seems to ring by itself, except that it must be done by hand. At the Paymaster’s Office, a ghost that comes out of the office computer has frightened away hired personnel. On the steps leading up to the Mill’s second floor, a ghostly child is said to trip unsuspecting shoppers as stunned employees watch helplessly. In one of the antiques centers, a female apparition waits to play with your hair as you browse the facility. Other store owners report sounds and whispers as they close the doors to what appear to be empty rooms.

Despite the fact that the Mill is an indoor facility and teeming with shopping enthusiasts, discovering the Mill’s exciting past as well as its intriguing paranormal present is easily done amidst the hustle and bustle of a typically busy day. With tours ending at the Ram’s Head Tavern, weary customers and ghost tourists alike can replenish their energy level while hearing even more about the Mill from the Tavern’s friendly employees.
